Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Delighting in Our Gifts From God
Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
The little girl in the after-school tutoring program was confounded by the crossword puzzle. And so were the two adults trying to help.
None of us could make any sense of it. After almost a half an hour of frustration, I told the very patient child that she could do something else. She asked to play a game with me. The program's rule was that a book should be read first, but considering the torture of the previous half-hour, I bent that rule.
Delighted, she chose a game in which we'd take turns telling a story inspired by pictures on dice. She created stories with ease and a big smile. It was lovely to see, and I left praying that this child's sense of herself would not be determined by the standards of others, but by her delight in the flourishing of the gifts given her by the God who knows her heart.
Creator God, thank you for your care for me.
