Fr. James McKarns is a retired pastor and author of books on Scripture, homiletics and self-help. He has contributed to Living Faith for more than 25 years and lives in Louisville, OH.
I was raised on a 300-acre dairy and beef cattle farm in Northeastern Ohio. My childhood experiences taught me much about true values and personal responsibilities. At an early age, I experienced first-hand the fascinating, agricultural cycles of planting, harvesting, care of the cattle and the farm-life seasons. The little country parish of St. John Church was a vital part of my youthful years. My primary and secondary education was in the public school system. I have two older brothers that have both pursued successful agricultural careers. After high school, I attended the seminary in Cincinnati, and in 1962, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio. For 12 years, I was an associate pastor in three churches and for 26 years, the pastor of three churches in Warren, Massillon and North Canton. In 1982, I participated in a three month sabbatical study program in Rome and Israel—an educational and energizing experience for me. I have been a weekly columnist for our diocesan newspaper and have written seven books on Scripture, homiletics and practical psychology. For 15 years, I traveled to many states, preaching parish missions with Isaiah Ministries and giving retreats to various groups. I now live in Louisville, Ohio.
I have been a Living Faith contributor for twenty-six years. I try to express ideas which I have first clarified in my own mind; with the hope that these thoughts will be beneficial to others. It is very encouraging when someone says a particular daily devotion was helpful or inspiring to them. When I write, I try to be positive, for I know many readers are looking for spiritual courage and trusting hope. I enjoy reading the contributions of the other writers and am glad to be part of this group. It is also rewarding to work with the professional and dedicated editor and staff of Living Faith. This publication has a significant mission in the world and I am pleased to be a part of it. My prayer is that these messages of faith will bring peace and blessings to all who read them.
