'Signs From Heaven (and Earth)'

Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.

- Luke 11:16

I admit, like members of the crowd around Jesus, I have asked for a sign from God on occasion. You know, just a little hint. We all pray for God's divine guidance to make good decisions. We justify our requests for a sign by qualifying a "good" choice as one that is in keeping with God's will.

Unlike those in Jesus' day who often asked for a sign in order to test him or to trap him, we ask for a sign because we seek the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. We ask because we have the gift of faith, not because we doubt the power or willingness of God to help us. Such faith has the power to change our hearts and places us on the path to follow God's will. Then our prayer and actions do become signs to others of God's presence in the world.

Amen, Deborah! "Such faith has the power to change our hearts and places us on the path to follow God's will!"

In the 'Faith' chapter of Hebrews 11:6a, "And it is impossible to please God without faith." Paul mentioned 'faith' seven times in today's first reading:
* have faith
* by faith
* have faith
* had faith
* by faith
* on faith
* through faith

The bottom line for me today is Galatians 3:14b, "so that we (I) might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

Sometimes it is confusing for me to understand who is on first, what is on second and I don't know is on third. Faith first, Holy Spirit second or Holy Spirit first and faith second? All I know is I am not first!!!

I am hanging onto this truth in Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." Amen!

I am with You, Lord Jesus! I am not scattered :-) Your presence with me is the sign I ask for. The peace in the midst of division and chaos is the sign of Your presence! "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; You, Lord Jesus, have come that I may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10) Amen!

Thank you Deborah for your inspiring devotion.

In times when I have too many things going on and way to many worries and I'm feeling overwhelmed, I ask God for little sign not because of the lack of belief in his divinity or the lack of faith but because I need to feel his presence by my side for comfort and consolation.

Oh Lord, please send me a little sign letting me know that you are here with me so that I can feel your comfort. It is through your consolation that I will feel peace. I trust you, Lord. Amen.

In my prayers I often ask God that I may feel his presence, not to test Him, but to be reassured that He knows and sees that I am trying to get closer to Him and do His will. And, more importantly, when I see or feel that presence, I know that He has not given up on me and still loves me:)

Lord, may I continue to feel Your presence and receive the grace of Your guidance everyday. Amen.

Blessings to the LF family.

I know it is hard to wait for our prayers to be answered but be assured that he will answer our prayers on his timeline.

Faith, not testing should be the course of action.
