DAILY DEVOTIONS:

'The Answer Is Yes'

But Jonah made ready to flee to Tarshish away from the LORD.

- Jonah 1:3

At Mass recently, a priest put the whole matter of sin rather succinctly and in a way I can't forget. In referring to Original Sin--and then, the original and unoriginal sin into which all of us fall--he said, "In the garden, human beings looked at their own Creator and said," and here he paused, "No."

Simple and to the point. Tragic, even.

Yes, it can be a challenge to discern God's will and what it is we are called to say "yes" to, but I have found that what helps is that it's not quite as hard to discern when I remember what saying "no" is really all about. It tends to narrow things down.

A community in need of hearing of God's mercy?

A child of God, wounded and bleeding at the side of the road?

Yes? Or no?

Creator God, open my eyes and grant me the grace to say "yes" to you.

Dennis, thank you for your thoughts today. All we need do is look to Mary's "yes" to see how simple and trusting true love and devotion to God can be. Without her "yes", where would the world be now? Simple and beautiful thoughts from you today!

Amen! Amy, great prayer, "Greator God, open my eyes and grant me the grace to say "yes" to You!" There is nothing in me that is capable of saying yes, only with the grace of God, the love of Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit!!!

It is easier for me to help and encourage those I don't know and have needs and have less because helping them makes me feel better about myself. How do I trust God in difficult situations like dealing with a difficult spouse, child, boss, relative, friend or co-worker when they make me feel less about myself? Yes or No? Your grace and mercy is new every morning, Lord! May You increase and I (at least my self-pity feelings) disappear please, Amen!
