'No Doubt, No Drought'

Elijah then said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain."

- 1 Kings 18:41

Elijah is elated to announce the Lord's victory over Ahab's false god Baal. The devastating drought has ended in answer to Elijah's prayer. Before ending the drought, Elijah's prayers raised a widow's son back to life. As prophets go, we must admit, Elijah tops the list. Thousands of years later, Jews, Christians and Muslims hold Elijah in high regard.

Elijah persevered humbly through fear and human weakness to do whatever God asked of him, never giving in to doubt. Do I pray without doubt in God's unfailing love and power? Do I cry out with joy for all to hear when God answers my prayers? How do I demonstrate my gratitude? Like Elijah, each of us is called to praise God with our lives in our own families, neighborhoods and broader environments.

Loving God, help me to love more, to forgive always and to be an instrument of peace.

To me, doubt is a real and constant companion in my faith journey! There are examples after examples of people who have doubted in the Bible and in history.......
* Abraham and Sarah on having a son in their old age - Genesis 17:17-22, 18:10-15
* Gideon on being the one to save Israel - Judges 6:36-40
* Elijah crouching down with his head between his knees and asking his servant to check seven times - 1 Kings 18:42-43
* John the Baptist in prison asking if Jesus is the Messiah - Matthew 11:3, Luke 7:19
* The infamous 'doubting' Thomas - John 20-24-29
* Mother Teresa - "She frequently wrote of loneliness, not hearing from God, personal hypocrisy and doubts about her own faith: “Darkness is such that I really do not see—neither with my mind nor with my reason—the place of God in my soul is blank—There is no God in me—when the pain of longing is so great—I just long & long for God … The torture and pain I can’t explain.”
* Pope Francis - "In an interview in America magazine, the pope even said doubt is an essential part of faith. “If one has the answers to all the questions—that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble.”

I believe doubt points me to the directions of God and to obedience despite my fear, my doubt and my unbelief with the convictions and help of the Holy Spirit :-)

The Word with the guidance of the Holy Spirit helps me through the trouble waters of fears, doubts, and unbeliefs and builds my faith muscle :-)
* Romans 10:17, "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word about Christ."
* James 1:2-4, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
* James 1:5-6, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind."

Lord, I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief (Mark 9:24) and build my faith muscle! Amen!

Thank you, Deborah, and Salina, for your insights--I've read some of St. Mother Teresa's words about her struggles with doubt, and it should give heart to all of us who struggle with trusting God--with remembering that hope is one of the cardinal virtues, but it does require a high degree of maintenance. One of the beauties of our Catholic faith is the stories of the prophets and saints, and how they remind us of the outcomes when we fight the good fight and win. We are all works-in-progress, but we have divine mentors and editors to help us along.

Amen. Thank you Holy Father for this day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and Reconcilliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory. Amen
