'God's Love and Forgiveness'

Lenten Weekday

Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?

- Matthew 18:33

"Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." If this were my only prayer for Lent, I think it would be enough. It would remind me that I am a sinner like any other (a fact I am keen to overlook) and obliged to treat others the way I want God to treat me. The truth is, I often count on God being nicer than I am. I want God's love and forgiveness even when I am at my most stingy and judgmental. But if I open my heart to make room for sinners and ingrates, I must admit that I am a sinner and an ingrate too. I hope and pray that God loves me anyway, just as I am. The catch is doing the same for others!

God of love and forgiveness, help me become more like you.

Yes, God continues to love and forgive me waiting for my repenting heart in Joel 2:12-13, "Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster."

If I refuse to forgive others from my heart, Matthew 18:34-35, "Then in anger his (my) master handed him (me) over to the torturers until he (I) should pay back the whole debt. So will My heavenly Father do to you (me), unless each of you (us) forgives your (our) brother from your (our) heart."

Forgiveness is not to excuse or forget the offenses. Forgiveness brings me freedom and peace in Christ Jesus. I have no power in doing it on my own but in Christ Jesus :-)

I know there are situations where forgiveness is very very difficult, but there is a better way in Romans 12:19-21, "Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."

Forgiveness is costly!!! It costs the life of God's Son to forgive me! What does it cost me to forgive? My desire for justice and to punish the offender? My emotions, my hurt, my pain, my right and my will?

Remember Jesus has paid for it ALL including my offenses and theirs! Overcome evil with good as Jesus explained to me in John 16:33, "I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

I come before You, Lord, as Daniel says in 3:39a, "But with contrite heart and humble spirit let us (me) be received;" Amen!

I love how it is done given the list in Colossians 3:12-17, "
* Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
* bearing with one another and,
* if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
* And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. * And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.
* And be thankful.
* Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
* with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
* And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

Amen! Thank you Lord for this day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and reconcilliation. Please Lord have mercy. Amen

Amen Karla and JS!!
One of my favorite hymns is "loving and forgiving are you O Lord, slow to anger, rich in kindness, loving and forgiving are You."
Lord please guide me in all my thoughts, words and actions to be like you.

A most beautiful reflection Karla, thank you.

Forgiving Lord, according to the Book of Daniel - Chapter 3:

*So let our sacrifice be in your presence today
as we follow you unreservedly;
for those who trust in you cannot be put to shame.
And now we follow you with our whole heart,
we fear you and we pray to you.
Do not let us be put to shame,
but deal with us in your kindness and great mercy.
Deliver us by your wonders,
and bring glory to your name, O Lord."
