'Eternal Value'

St. Cyril of Jerusalem

I love you, O LORD, my strength,
O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.

- Psalm 18:2-3

A couple of years ago, we visited the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta. There's a tour there, during which you can peer through windows and see lots and lots of paper money being collected and sorted. At the end, you take away a little plastic bag full of shredded bills, once "worth" something, now "worth" nothing.

And, of course, I had to then answer the question, "Why is one piece of paper worth something and another not?" Try answering that question when it comes from an 8-year-old. Try answering it for yourself. What do we value? Why?

The question of value is perplexing and is central to this season of Lent. Why is this pastime or that thing so valuable to me? Can I give it up? And in the sacrifice of that thing on which I've bestowed so much value, can I discover the true, eternal value of my real rock, my faithful deliverer, Jesus Christ?

Lord, I trust in you alone. You alone are my savior.

Please pray for my son who continues to fail in trusting and seeking Jesus. II pray that he will be strengthened in faith, mind, and body. Pray for all mothers and their prodigal sons and daughters that we, too, will trust in God's mercy and goodness. Lord, we offer up our trials to You.

Yesterday I heard a story about a young couple who had to search through 8 tons of garbage to find two weddings rings worth over 0,000 that they accidently threw into the garbage. They, through prayer and determination found their treasure. But I realize my true treasure is my relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And I am willing to go through everything and anything , even garbage, that I might know, love, and serve my Lord now and always.

The rings were worth 0,000

I have found that I am not successful when I try to up "things" for Lent--like sugar or frozen yogurt or Starbucks. Rather, this Lent I have given up my stubbornness in a particular relationship. I am amazed with my change in attitude. I pray for continued mending of relationships, peace and harmony in our family. We need each other, particularly as we get older.

The image of Federal Reserve and the question, "Can I discover the true, eternal value of my real rock, my faithful deliverer, Jesus Christ?" prompted me to think: Will I be able to recognize Jesus when He comes back again? Or will I be like the Jews who tried to stone Jesus when He claimed to be God?

I have been told in Scriptures that Jesus is coming back again just like the Jews were told the Messiah was coming. How do I know I won't miss Him just as the Jews did?

Then I remember how the FBI agents are trained to spot the counterfeits. They don't learn about the counterfeits, they study and study the genuine things until they master the look of the real thing!

Do you ever wonder if Jesus is speaking on TV so the world can hear Him, will you say He is blaspheming just as the Jews did when He came the first time? Remember we don't know what Jesus looks like and He doesn't wear a halo. And if He is anything like He was the first time, He was an ordinary Joe according to Scripture.

I would study and study the genuine One, Jesus Christ until I master the real One! That will be until the day I see Him face to face in life or in death :-)

1 John 4:2-3, "This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God. But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here."

2 Peter 1:2-3a, 4b, 8, "May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. By His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know Him........ He has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share His divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires......The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." Amen!

To me, the Bible is the biography of our God. It tells me Who He is, what He did, what He is doing and what He will do.

Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Amen!

I heard a saying from my Bible Study Fellowship teaching leader long ago that I made it into bookmarks for all my Bibles: On one side it says, "What does this passage of Scripture reveal about God - His Person, His Purposes, and/or His Work?" On the other side it says, "What I believe about God determines what I believe about myself, my world, my purposes, my life and how I behave!"

For my faith, my life and my family. Please Lord have mercy on me and
Forgive me. Amen
