I cannot read this passage in Ecclesiastes without immediately recalling a classic song by the Byrds, “Turn, Turn, Turn.” It pointed out that everything has its season, and in each season, God’s sense of time is different from our own. Ecclesiastes posts a litany of seeming opposites in a life—a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to uproot the plant. We may read them as reminders that in our lives we may experience times of being consoled with a sense of closeness to God, as well as heavier times when we feel distant or separated from God. Both are inner movements of the spiritual life. Both remind us of the need for careful discernment.
In whatever season of the soul we may find ourselves, one thing is certain. The Holy One walks beside us, sees the path forward and will never abandon us.
