Lately I find myself thinking about the essence of things. What really matters? Today’s passage from Ecclesiastes reminds us that all our grasping for material things, influence and reputation is mere vanity and will be washed to the sea in the end. Even our senses don’t quite grasp the hidden reality of our lived experience.
Last fall, when I proposed to my bachelor son that he host Thanksgiving, he backpedaled with all sorts of reasons why he couldn’t possibly do it. I assured him that prepared dishes from the grocery store would help out and that all that really mattered was that we were together and grateful, even just eating pie on a park bench.
A word that has become ubiquitous these days is “perfect.” But no human endeavor really is, and all our labors to achieve perfection by our own lights are fruitless.
