The Exaltation of the Holy Cross
The Victory of the Cross
…he humbled himself,
becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Philippians 2:8

“The Cross stands firm while the world turns,” is the motto of the ancient Carthusian Order of contemplative monks and nuns. This simple, yet profound, spiritual principle is at the heart of the Church’s celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

In the world’s eyes, the Cross of Jesus makes little sense. But with eyes of living faith, we see the wisdom of God in Jesus’ loving self-gift on the Cross. The evangelist John presents the Gospel in a nutshell when he writes, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

God chose the way of suffering to reconcile us to friendship with God. And so in gratitude, we pray…

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

I give thanks to God for your divine inspiration to share the devotional with those in the LFF community, Jem. Your words remind me of how I changed the words over time to the Spiritual, "Were you there when they crucified my Lord." The word "Were, the word "Are." Are you there, with the women standing there watching the Lord being nailed to the tree." Are you there as Jesus speaks the words of forgiveness to the criminals on either side of him? Are you there when they laid him in the tomb." When I ask you, "Are you there?"...

Just catching up. As always, and like most of you there is always something to deal with. But I wanted to say how much the people here make a difference. Salina, I needed your comment about the 77 times, forgiving the same offense 77 times. Every week if not every day some childhood memory will haunt me and although I’ve prayed “Lord I forgive” (because the offenders have long ago passed on), I still feel like “why if I’ve forgiven do those things still bother me”. Maybe I need to accept the “77” times and forgive those events over and...

What does God says about the cross? *** It’s foolishness to the world and power to the saved in 1 Corinthians 1:19, “The message of the cross seems foolish to those who are lost and dying. But it is God’s power to us who are being saved.” *** Brag about the cross because it has crucified the way of the world in me in Galatians 6:14, “I never want to brag about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through that cross the ways of the world have been crucified as far as I am concerned. And I...
