22nd Week in Ordinary Time
New Wine
…no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Luke 5:37

Fasting is a holy practice but not at a wedding! Killjoys like the disciples of the Pharisees and of John the Baptist fasted all the time. They even bashed Jesus’ disciples, who “eat and drink.” To answer their objections, Jesus casts himself in the role of “the bridegroom.” For Jesus’ disciples, fasting is the last thing on their minds! Jesus naming himself as the bridegroom emphasizes the breadth of his love for his bride—this we now know is none other than ourselves, the Church. We would never have dared an image of such intimacy if Jesus himself did not “propose” it to us first!

As if to underscore the newness, the freshness, the sheer joy of our mutual love, Jesus offers a parable. Don’t just “patch” (v. 3) an old cloak; get a new one! Don’t keep old wineskins; there’s a new vintage! So, everyone, I propose a toast!

Here’s to Jesus and his Beloved, a blessing for us all!

Come out to meet him!’ Then all the bridesmaids woke up and got their lamps ready.” *** The difference is the Holy Spirit represented by the oil in Matthew 25:8-9, “The foolish ones said to the wise ones, ‘Give us some of your oil. Our lamps are going out.’ “ ‘No,’ they replied. ‘There...
