The early disciples talked about Jesus mostly to their fellow Jews. But in Antioch, they began to speak to the Greeks and were amazed at their receptivity to the message of Jesus. As a result, many Greeks became Christians. Those early disciples may have wondered, “How big is Christianity going to get?” They probably had no idea that Christianity today would be the largest and most widely spread religion in the world—with about 2.6 billion followers.
Followers. That is the key word here, not the humongous numbers. In today’s Gospel, Jesus himself gives us the best definition of who Christians are: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). If I identify myself as a Christian, then how am I listening to Jesus’ voice? How well do I personally know Jesus—especially through my prayer? And how do I show through my attitudes, choices and priorities that I’m truly following Jesus?
