Jesus’ teaching on the holy Eucharist was one of his most challenging. Asserting and confirming that his followers were called to eat his flesh and drink his blood was not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, Jesus’ words were not as cannibalistic as they originally appeared. Nonetheless, it is little wonder that Jesus’ words were as divisive to his detractors as they were unitive to his disciples.
We as Catholics are called to partake in the Eucharist as long as we are in a state of grace (hence, the vital connection between the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with the Eucharist). At the same time, we must be sure to promote the beautiful truth of how the Eucharist enriches our life, both temporally and, one day, in the eternal banquet of heaven.

John 6:63 states, "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life" (NIV). This verse emphasizes that spiritual life comes through the Holy Spirit and Jesus' teachings, rather than physical effort or rituals.
