The 17th-century Dutch Masters were known to paint still life art with compelling objects: sometimes a skull, an expired candle, oftentimes lush, dewy fruit, fresh seafood or an elegant glass of wine. Everything in the painting was captured in a moment of perfection! Yet, if the artist were to come back to his real-life setting a week later, the grapes would be shriveled, the oysters smelly and the wine on its way to becoming vinegar. These still life paintings were called “vanitas” from the biblical line: “Vanity of vanities…All things are vanity!” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). They were meant to be moral reminders of the transience of earthly life.
Did you ever desire and obtain something that, over time, diminished or didn’t turn out to be all that you had hoped? A new car, an exotic vacation, a supposed “dream” job?
What will you do today that will last beyond this temporal life? Will you be kind; will you walk alongside your grieving friend; will you love?

*** The crowd was looking for Jesus in John 6:24-25, “The crowd realized that Jesus and his disciples were not there. So they got into boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
