The Octave of Easter
Set My Eyes on Christ
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Psalm 16:8

What difference does the resurrection make for you?

The Mass readings this week invite us to linger with the disciples, who took a while to absorb the truth that Jesus rose from death. I tend to take that for granted, but still I can relate. Because like them, sometimes I’m gobsmacked to realize my sin helped to crucify the Lord. Like them, sometimes I’m afraid in spite of Easter joy. Afraid I’ll be persecuted for my faith. Afraid because I can’t see the Lord in what’s happening to me. Afraid…just because.

Then today’s psalm reminds me to set my eyes on the Lord: to not move on and forget Easter but to hold that image of Christ, resurrected, front and center. Because he lives, so can I! And so can you. He will show us the path to life and joy, if we keep our eyes on him.

This resonates with me. For years I’ve felt like God has been whispering for me to share my testimony, but I’ve been scared. Afraid I’ll be persecuted. But the homily at Easter and the last few masses have spoken to me to gather my courage and spread the word of Jesus, and considering this is my first time ever grabbing the Living Faith booklet from church and actually reading the entry for today, it feels purposeful to provide the courage I need. How did Peter go from not understanding after Jesus’ resurrection to understanding to declare and preach the Good News at Pentecost? *** The Holy Spirit that Jesus has promised in Acts 1:4-5, “One day Jesus was eating with them. He gave them a command. “Do not leave Jerusalem,” He said. “Wait for the gift My Father promised. You have heard Me talk about it. John baptized with water. But in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” *** Why the Holy Spirit? To help us in John 14:16-17a, “I (Jesus) will ask the Father. And He...
