Today’s readings are replete with refreshing waters, as if to address a dry spot in our Lenten observance. Everything lives where the river flows. The place from which it gathers its strength is the Temple in Jerusalem, the dwelling place of God. The great blessings flowing from the Temple stream are not only a sign of hope for the Israelites in exile but extend out to present an image of Paradise itself.
The miracle that Jesus performs at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-16), where the blind, lame and crippled come for healing, is accomplished not by contact with the healing waters but by the simple command to rise and walk. In his own person, Jesus is the new Temple from whom all blessings flow.
This is what sustains our Lenten journey: the trust that our lives will bear fruit only by a deeper attachment to his life-giving death and resurrection.
