Fourth Sunday of Lent
Blinding Clarity
One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.
John 9:25

This is one of my favorite Gospels, full of drama and irony and emotion: A good-hearted and simple man is miraculously cured by Jesus of his blindness. The religious authorities are upset the healing by Jesus took place on the Sabbath. They try to browbeat the man and his parents. The parents want no part of this conflict and tell them to talk to their son. He who was born blind is the one person who sees with blinding clarity that any man who could do such a miracle is no sinner. Only the blind man has the true sight of faith, while his persecutors are blinded by their prejudice and their jealousy. One must admire the courage of the man born blind to speak truth to power. Like many saints, from Stephen to Bernadette, his job was not to convince the blind but to testify to the truth, come what may.

Lord, help me to see your truth and proclaim it.

He thought, “This has to be the one the Lord wants me to anoint for Him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider how handsome or tall he is. I have not chosen him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outside of a person. But the Lord looks at what is in the heart.” *** Is it my pre-conception of consequences/punishments blinded me in...

Thankful for this devotion today Greg. The question that comes up in my heart is where do I need clarity in my life? When I meditate on this question I come to realize that God knows who I am very intimately: God knows my thoughts, words, when I rise and sleep (Psalm 139) in my own words. There is clarity in honesty and truth, there is clarity in celebrating unconditional love and being a presence for someone in this journey called living a Christian life. May it be so.
