St. Vincent de Paul
God Dwells With Us
…and they shall be his people and he will dwell among you.
Zechariah 2:15A

“Where is God?” The Israelites questioned how and when God would be present in their midst. And time and time again, they were assured that the divine presence would not be found in abstract statements or lofty ideas about God. Rather, God desired to dwell among the people, to walk closely with them, to accompany them on every step on the pilgrimage of life.

To encounter the living God who dwells among us is the joy of living faith.

God’s promises to Israel are deeply comforting. “Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord” (v. 14). God fulfills this divine promise perfectly in sending his divine son Jesus to dwell with us as one of us!

Jesus continues this divine indwelling with humanity in the supreme gift of his divine presence in Word and Sacrament, especially in the Eucharist. Where do you encounter the close indwelling and loving presence of God?

I meet with them (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) every time I go to the bathroom sitting down in front of the countertop between the two sinks with my Bible studies (BSF and CBS) and my Bible spread out! They talk through His Word, I listen and I ask questions. He explains and smiles, “Do you understand?” I say, “Tell me more!” *** Here’s my question, “Why didn’t they understand in Luke 9:45, “But they didn’t understand what this meant. That was because it was hidden from them. And they were afraid to ask Jesus about it!”” *** It was...

Encountering the Living breathing Spirit happens in the daily tasks of life. Waking up, looking out at the creation of the sunrise, sunset, clouds, rain, stars, sun and moon. Getting breakfast for the family, preparing lunches , walking, exercising, studying, meditating, being among friends and family. God dwells with us all the time, therefore rejoice, sing your favorite hymns, give thanks for every breath you have. Then share that breath with strangers by giving and serving in love always.

I experience God’s indwelling presence in various ways - when I’m reading scripture and meditating on the Word the Spirit often speaks to my heart and I feel prompted to share His message; When I’m prayerfully present at the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament; When I am reflecting on the powerful presence of Jesus after receiving Communion. The Lord shows himself to us in various ways throughout the day; we only need to be open to his presence and/or his word. Sometimes that means that we talk less and listen more.

Your comments on where you encounter the Spirit really touched home with me. I experience the Spirit in so many ordinary, daily experiences, especially the beauty of nature, especially on warm, sunny days like today. I just feel his presence in so many ways that I find it hard not to smile , thinking of all the many ways I have been blessed - more than I could ever have imagined. May the Lord God continue to touch us all with his Spirit!
