The Chair of St. Peter
Knowing God, Knowing Self
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Matthew 16:15

In graduate school, I took one course where the professor would begin by asking a complex question not clearly related to anything we had studied in preparation for his class. Once he had uttered it, the entire class would sit with downcast eyes and give the appearance of studying our notes, knowing that whomever the professor called on would be grilled for the next thirty minutes.

So Peter’s reply to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” is especially impressive. There was no fallback on what “some say.” No hesitation, no avoidance, no wavering. Peter replied from his own conviction, from his own deep reflection, from his own cooperation with God’s grace. How might we respond to Jesus’ question today?

Loving Jesus, reveal to my life the fullness of who you truly are.

Lord please hear our prayers and bring your light to all those in need. Come to the side of those experiencing violence in Haiti, the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Darfur, and the Sudan. Please hear the pleas of all those suffering around the world - and give them strength, courage and resilience to continue walking in faith. Send them your light. Father in Heaven, have mercy on us and on the whole world! You sent Your Son, the Prince of Peace, for the salvation of the world. We pray that the Peace of Christ will reign in Haiti, the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Darfur and Sudan. Please protect and send aid to those in need and all who are at-risk. We pray for peace and rebuilding– we who are working towards it and for all those who are suffering or in danger from conflicts. We pray for an end to violence and war – we pray for wisdom for all leaders who have a hand in this. Lord God please help those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

The good thing is I don't have to think about answering the question because it is not about me but Who is in me :-) *** Here is Peter's answer without hesitation in Matthew 16:16, "Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah. You are the Son of the living God.”" *** Here is what Jesus said the One showed Peter the answer and not Peter himself in Matthew 16:17, "Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! No mere human showed this to you. My Father in heaven showed it to you!" *** You see, I will not be speaking but my indwelling Holy Spirit in Matthew 10:20, "It will not be you speaking. The Spirit of your Father will be speaking through you!" Mark 13:11c, "It is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit!" ******* I am not my own but God's in 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Don’t you know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit? The Spirit is in you, and you have received the Spirit from God. You do not belong to yourselves!" Thank God ❤️✝️❤️

“In Greek, the word for rock is petra, which means a large, massive stone. The word used for Simon's new name is different; it's Petros, which means a little stone, a pebble.”
