January, the beginning of the calendar year, features a perennial discussion between some Catholics of when precisely the Christmas season ends. Some speak of the “Eight Days of Christmas” and others the “Twelve Days.” Or is it on the Baptism of the Lord…or Candlemas? There are varying worthwhile interpretations, but one thing is for sure: Jesus came for us, and we celebrated this on Christmas Day. But how do we regard Christ during the rest of the Church calendar, the liturgical year?
In today’s Gospel, Jesus cured various physical ailments, exorcised demons, prayed and preached. He came—and comes—for us according to our temporal and moral needs. But his ultimate goal, every day of the year, is to see us follow him in the sacramental, moral life so that we can be with him forever in heaven.
Do you know your prayers are incense with a sweet aroma going up to the throne room? Revelation 8:3-4, “Another angel came and stood at the altar. He had a shallow gold cup for burning incense. He was given a lot of incense to offer on the golden altar. The altar was in front of the throne. With the incense he offered the prayers of all God’s people. The smoke of the incense rose up from the angel’s hand. The prayers of God’s people rose up together with it. The smoke and the prayers went up in front of God.” When I pray now, I picture it like a lighted scented candle with the aroma and smoke going up to God’s throne room ✝️
*** Please pray for Jessi, my daughter finishing up medical school ✝️ *** She was asked to speak at the alumni dinner tonight at xxxxxxx *** Pray that she can focus and not let distractions bother her. * May God's favor of grace and mercy be her focus! * May God's wisdom be her guide! * May she be encouraged by the word of the Holy Spirit given to her to write her speech right now! By His Grace and for His Glory ✝️ In Jesus' Name above all names, I pray in agreement with the Holy Spirit! Amen ✝️
AMEN!
Good morning. I was just thinking along the same lines the other day—Christmas being “over”. I remember my rotation in psychiatric nursing and depression was always at a high point right after Christmas as so many would plummet in their feelings after the hype and “people” time of the holidays. Watch out for those with low spirits during the northern hemisphere cold, after Christmas depression, and pray for them. Praying for Tom and all of our peeps here. Haven’t seen peggyR post in a long long time, praying all is well with her and her grandson. Thank you for asking jane, we are still on weekly visits to Atlanta. Garrett sees the surgeon again on Feb 27. The large wound on the back of his hand is almost healed…without a skin graft!! I can’t wait until the orthopedic clinic people see it so they can be blessed by witnessing a miracle—what should have absolutely been 2 separate skin grafts have healed—to be a bearer of Christ’s word without speaking—so cool! Garrett’s spirits are better too as he has a bit more acceptance and both these things are credited to prayers of soo many I absolutely know—God has mercy and hears His people and I have been blessed by God reinforcing my faith in what prayer can truly do. Still a long way to go as PT is starting and he can’t move the middle finger but a fraction and he is worried about his future work abilities. jane, be safe in Italy and enjoy the adventure. I may have missed what class you are taking and would love for you to share your new knowledge! A new prayer added to my daily is for the administration here to be given the knowledge and savvy to maintain our community that has been built, in the face of AI and those wanting to cause disruption. God’s will be done in all this! Have a warm happy day everyone, may the Lord reveal Himself to those suffering loss due to storms, fires and other hardships. Peace and joy to all.
