St. Leo the Great
Reason to Believe
Those who have never been told of him shall see,
and those who have never heard of him shall understand.
Romans 15:21

When I was young, I became enthralled with the idea of being a missionary in faraway lands. What could be more meaningful, I wondered, than taking the Gospel to those who never heard it before? I imagined telling Jesus’ story in remote African villages and seeing the people come alive with faith and hope.

The work of global missionaries is still essential, but I have come to understand that the mission field is bigger than I ever imagined. It’s so big because it starts right in front us—in our families, communities, schools and businesses. For there are many who have heard the name of Jesus but never encountered him in another person. The most effective missionaries give of themselves first and then introduce Jesus as the source of their strength, kindness and hope. They give others a reason to believe.

Send me out, Lord, near and far.

Indeed, "For there are many who have heard the Name of Jesus but never encountered Him in another person!" It is however important that the personal encounter points others to Jesus and not my own good work!!! I prefer others to encounter Jesus directly through my words and actions if God is willing!!! *** We are being sent to show and tell in Romans 10:14-15, "How can they call on Him unless they believe in Him? How can they believe in Him unless they hear about Him? How can they hear about Him unless someone preaches to them? And how can anyone preach without being sent? It is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring Good News!” (Isaiah 52:7)" *** The Great Commission commanded by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20, "So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end.” *** In the power of the Holy Spirit we are sent to proclaim the Good News in Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will tell people about Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria. And you will even tell other people about Me from one end of the earth to the other.” ******* Helping others without telling them about Jesus is like giving fish for them to eat without teachng them how to fish!!! The only thing they know is that I become the source of food and not Jesus!!! Here is the definition of missionary, "a person sent on a religious mission, especially one sent to promote Christianity in a foreign country." *** Matthew 4:19, "Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” *** Mark 1:17, "Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” *** Luke 5:10, "Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will fish for people.” ******* Scripture tells us all the apostles died martyrs (except John) telling others about Jesus!!! Luke 12:48b, "When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required!"

May God continue to bless our missionaries throughout the world

St. Mother Teresa never tried to convert anyone. She brought people to faith by her actions. It is the old adage of "leading by example." I recognize this in our Catholic brothers and sisters, especially at my church. We are all so happy in our faith that it radiates on our faces!

Thanks Steve! So many opportunities or us to be missionaries in our various communities. Many years ago after I graduated from college I did a year of volunteer work in Mexico living with the Religious of the Assumption (missionary nuns). We built a chapel while I was there. A little bit of Lillies of the Field!!! It was a fantastic experience, but there are all of those opportunities here, too. Stormy, so sorry for the loss of Ginny and know that she is with Shiloh and in God’s capable hands. Amen.

Lord, please watch over and protect the humanitarian corridors being established in Gaza. Hear our continued prayers for those in the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, the Sudan, and all those suffering around the world - also for their strength, courage and resilience to continue walking in faith. Father in Heaven, have mercy on us and on the whole world! You sent Your Son, the Prince of Peace, for the salvation of the world. We pray that the Peace of Christ will reign in the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia and Sudan. Please protect and send aid to those in need and all who are at-risk. We pray for peace and rebuilding– we who are working towards it and for all those who are suffering or in danger from conflicts. We pray for an end to violence and war – we pray for wisdom for all leaders who have a hand in this. Lord God please help those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

As you leave the grounds of the White House Retreat Center in St. Louis, there is a sign “You are now entering the mission fields.” Didn’t give it much thought, until now.
