The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
Stay Close to Jesus
Behold, your mother.
John 19:27

How often we may tell children, “Listen to your mother.” Today we celebrate Mary, Mother of the Church. It reminds us not to just listen to but try to imitate our mother. It is wonderful to acclaim her in flowered grottos and in May crownings, but let’s not forget her intense suffering.

Mary our mother was a strong woman who walked by utter faith, not by sight. She did not know the end of the story as we do. She suffered as a mother does when her child is sick or bullied. Imagine the great “why” that flooded her heart as she stood at the Cross, for her Child had only done good. Overcome with sorrow but without bitterness, she stayed close to Jesus to the last.

Today, may we ask Mary to teach us to walk by faith. May we, like her, stay close to Jesus to the last, without bitterness—no matter what—in all the events of our life!

Going through a difficult period right now. I feel this devotional is speaking to me. Trying not to be bitter about the hand that has been dealt to me. It’s a real challenge for me, I somehow need to get through this stretch and hope for better days ahead.

Sr. Bridgette, thank you for the beautiful reflection. Walking by faith…so challenging. I can only imagine that Mary must have been questioning a lot.

*** Facts (Content) in John 19:33-34, "But when they (the soldiers) came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into His side, and immediately blood and water flowed out." *** Outcome (Truth) in John 19:35, "The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe." *** Conclusions (Subject/Topic) in John 19:36-37, "These things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken,” (Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20) and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced." (Zechariah 12:10) ******* All Scripture must be fulfilled! Matthew 26:56a, Mark 14:49, Luke 4:21, Luke 18:31, Luke 22:37, Luke 24:44, John 13:18, Acts 1:16, and the list goes on if I search for 'Scripture fulfilled' in www.biblegateway.com...Do you know Scripture and what is to come accordng to God's plan? Do you know understand and how to explain all the injustice and suffering and pain and untimely innocent death in this world? Do you know Jesus personally? *** Applications: I study the Scripture daily to seek what God has to teach me today through the Holy Spirit Who explains the Scripture to me! "We cannot say that one should believe the Bible simply because the Bible says it should be believed. If, however, the truth claims of the Bible are found true whenever it is possible to test their veracity or are proved true during historical and scientific discovery, then the internal claims of the Bible’s own trustworthiness are more compelling. The internal evidence works in tandem with the external." https://www.gotquestions.org/why-should-I-believe-the-Bible.html

Jerusalem is the mother of us all. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. Galatians 4:26
