St. John of God
Strength in Fasting
Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits,
and drive all your laborers.
Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting,
striking with wicked claw.
Isaiah 58:3-4
It's the first Friday of Lent, and here am I, giving up things, fasting and abstaining, just the way I should. Good for me. But here am I also on the same day, standing in the kitchen, irritated and letting the irritation affect others, scoring a point, determined to emerge the victor. In one of his Lenten sermons, St. Leo the Great expressed the challenge and promise of connecting the Lenten fast to the rest of life: "For it is not enough that the substance of our flesh should be reduced, if the strength of the soul be not also developed."
Jesus, I offer up my emptiness; fill it with your love.

Hahaha! Amy, what you share reminds me of the 2010 Superbowl Snickers commercial with Betty White :-) When I am hungry and tired, I am not myself and irritated!

So with me it is not about giving up things, fasting and abstaining, but standing firm on Christ, indulging on my soul and embracing my faith!
* I will give up things so another can stand firm on Christ;
* I will fast on devices or whosoever so I can indulge on my soul;
* I will abstain from my own desires so I can embrace my faith openly!

I will give You thanks, my God and my Lord, for You answered me; You have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Amen! (Psalm 118:21-25)

Amy, this was me this AM I usually have everything laid out and when I arise I sit quietly and say my prayers and read my books. This morning my adult son was up early cleaning and moving things around. Asking questions looking for stuff, I lost it telling him I needed to get my things together first. What a great father. When I get home tonight I will apologize.
Praying for Diana, Debbie, Carren Denise, Joseph and Naomi now. Ken
