A Saint Around the Corner
When the just cry out, the [uc]Lord[/uc] hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.
It seemed as if every time we passed the church around the corner from our small hotel, the door was locked. Finally, one afternoon, I noticed that the door was open. I peeked in: a stone church, worn wood pews, an elaborate old altar.
And near what had been the grill through which cloistered sisters had heard Mass in this former Carmelite convent chapel, stood a display: photographs of one Sister Veronica, a few pamphlets and a book in which to note prayers answered, perhaps because of the intercession of this nun, who died in 1964 and has now been declared a Servant of God.
All this time, I thought, a saint around the corner, hidden. I wondered how many others there are around other corners. I must always combat self-centeredness in my spiritual life and instead remember that God is at work in every life, behind every door in my neighborhood, hearing, rescuing, drawing near.
