Expressing the Inexpressible
The Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.
Romans 8:26
When I learned that my grandson needed testing for a serious medical condition, I was heartbroken. In my worry and misery, I didn't feel able to pray. Sometimes we are too sad or upset to know what to say to God. Our pain is too great, and our prayers can seem inadequate, hollow or somehow poorly composed...or we're ashamed, or angry, and we don't even want to talk to God. But God never leaves us alone, unable to speak to him. The Spirit intercedes for us, even when we have no words. We can approach God with great freedom, even when we don't know what to say. The Spirit is there and comes to our aid, expressing the inexpressible.
Lord, I know your Spirit intercedes for me when I don't know how to pray as I ought.
