'Measuring a Person's Worth'

Sts. John de Brebeuf and Isaac Jogues and Companions

You are worth more than many sparrows.

- Luke 12:7

A moving company was packing up a wealthy man's estate. Said the owner to one of the movers, "Be careful with that vase! It's over 500 years old!" The mover replied, "Don't worry, mister. I'll treat it like it was brand new!"

The little story raises the question, how do we determine what a thing is worth? Some might say by its antiquity or rarity. A tougher question to answer is this: How do we measure a person's worth? By their income, power, productivity? Jesus assures us that we all possess great value--simply because we are all sons and daughters of the same Living God.

How do we let people know their true worth? We do this largely by the way we interact with them. Today, show someone their real worth by using a gentle tone of voice, providing a listening ear, expressing gratitude or by doing a simple act of kindness.

Loving God, may I never forget my own worth nor the worth of all my brothers and sisters.

Thank you Sr. Melannie for your devotion today.

God knows everything about us, we can't hide from Him even when we think he's not looking, and we judge, mistreat and condemn people that are different than us, when we set aside people that are financially less fortunate than us; the homeless.

Today's Gospel says, "There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known".

Lord Jesus, you know us from the inside out and the only one that can measure our worth. Please help us to be kind and humble to one another so that we can be "worth many sparrows" in your eyes. Amen

Amen. Thank you Holy Father for this beautiful day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life, and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and reconciliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory. Amen

Let's be dyslexic on what Jesus said in Luke 12:7, "
* You are worth more than many sparrows.
* SO...Do not be afraid.
* BECAUSE HE KNOWS...Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.

Fear of "I am not worthy?"
* Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
* John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
* 1 Peter 1:18-19, "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect."

That is how much I am worth.......the life and blood of Christ!

For what purpose that I am worthy? Pauls tells us in Ephesians 1:12, 14,
* for the praise of His glory!
* to the praise of His glory!

How do I do that? Pauls tells us in Ephesians 1:12-14,
* first hoped in Christ
* heard the word of truth
* believed in Him
* sealed with the promised Holy Spirit
* toward redemption as God's possession

Salina, blessings. All you really have to do is read St. John Chrysostom's book: ON WEALTH and POVERTY. Everyone should read it.

Nick, thank you for the reminder :-)

I received the book in the mail last week and I just finished reading the introduction! It is interesting and I will finish the rest (reading book is not my gift :-( The following is my reflection so far:
* John 15:18, "If the world hates YOU (me), keep in mind that it hated Me (Jesus) first."
* Romans 3:10, "There is NO one righteous, not even one;" (I cannot earn righteousness in suffering! I should be )
* Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
* 2 Peter 1:5-7, "In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. SUPPLEMENT your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone."
* Mark 2:17, Luke 5:31, Matthew 9:12, "Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have NOT come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Thank you for today’s message.

Remember that everyone is important to our God. In today’s Gospel, we are told that Jesus knows all, nothing will be hidden.

We are so blessed today to be a servant and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.
