'Lasting Treasure'

St. Ignatius of Antioch

Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.

- Luke 12:21

My parents and grandparents left behind boxes and boxes of letters and photographs. They left record albums and books. I wonder sometimes about my generation and, even more so, those that follow. Most of our communication is digital and exists only as a series of 0s and 1s. So it is with our music, our photographs and even our books.

I might not be leaving behind as much physical material, but is that even important?

Today we celebrate the memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, who was marched across Asia Minor to be executed in Rome for his faith in Christ. As he traveled, the prisoner wrote letters. His tone is confident and even joyful. His trust in Jesus is complete; his conviction of the truth rings from the page. That's what he left behind. What is true and what lasts. A treasure.

Jesus, may I be mindful of what I store up and mindful of the witness I will leave behind.

Lord,

Help me to give over control to you so that you may lead me down the right path. Give me patience and perseverance. Help me to let go of the material things in my life knowing that you are all I need.

Lord,

Today's reading and devotion remind me that I am on borrowed time.

Help me to trust you completely as you guide to live a life that is pleasing to you.

AMEN!

I love this passage in Ephesians today! It states who I was, who I am and who I will be!

Who I was: I was dead in my transgressions and sins in which I once lived following the age of this world (digital world of fame and fortune), following the ruler of the power of the air (TV, movies and entertainments), I once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and I was by nature children of wrath, like the rest.

Who I am: But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love He had for me, even when I was dead in my transgressions, brought me to life with Christ (by grace I have been saved), and this is not from me; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For I am His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God has prepared in advance, that I should live in them.

Who I will be: He raised me up with Him, and seated me with Him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in His kindness to me in Christ Jesus.

Amen! I give thanks to You, Lord Jesus! Bless Your Name, for You are good: my LORD, Your kindness endures forever, and Your faithfulness, to all generations. The Lord has made me, I belong to You. Amen!

Awesome Salina...the Word of God surely is. I like how you catalogued the reading: Past, Present, and Future. It's this future that provides great hope!!!
