DAILY DEVOTIONS:

'Snakes and Scorpions'

St. John XXIII

What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?

- Luke 11:11-12

I love Jesus' more colorful parables. Let's put ourselves into the first mini-parable today: It's midnight, your kids are asleep, you're in pajamas playing Words with Friends before bed, and there's a knock at the door. Your neighbor has a houseguest and no food. Could he have some? Of course, obligations of hospitality were different then and a traveler arriving at midnight after a long trip more common. Still! Come on! But you do it anyway, because he's persistent and he's your neighbor.

Then, the second mini-parable asks if you would give a child who wanted an egg a scorpion. A scorpion? Seriously? These memorable stories hammer home a basic point, of course--if we fallen humans manage unconditional love and giving with those we care about, why would we think God would ever withhold the Holy Spirit from someone seeking it? Seek and you will find.

Thank you Phil for your devotion.

I honestly haven't had the time for Bible study because I've always been too busy working to support myself. But now that I'm home retired, I've taken more interest in my faith. What I do daily is watch two Catholic channels EWTN and KNXT where I get inspiration and have learned so much about Jesus, Mary our Blessed Mother, St Joseph, the Scriptures and so much more....

I also just recently started clicking on the "Today's Mass Readings" and subscribed to USCCB Daily Readings where there is so much food to taste.

Living Faith family thank you for your wonderful comments.

Patrick, I like what you wrote. I too want to taste the Lords goodness as part of my balanced daily diet!

Amen. Thank you Lord for you loving kindness; you strength and your guidance. Asking for your mercy and forgiveness and to lead me in thy way always. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Jacalynn, I understand completely about not having time for a bible study, so I sort of formulated my own. My youngest son is in 8th grade and in the faith formation at our parish. About 3 years ago, I started teaching the high school students preparing for Confirmation about the sacraments. It is like a bible study with these youth. We look at the Old Testament where God gave signs and foretold the sacraments, and we see in the New Testament where Jesus instituted each sacrament. I have learned a lot. It's a new adventure every session.

Jacalynn and Patrick thank you for your sharing your experiences. I am so thankful as well that I make special time before my day begins to reflect on weekly scripture readings with my study bible. These times I find the Holy Spirit speaking directly to me as I make my notes to hopefully journal later in the week.

Amen

Back in the 90's I decided to take more interest in my faith. As the saying goes you can't judge a book by its cover. So I got the urge to read the bible. Shortly after that a flyer came in the post about bible study in a local school. Now I had no excuse so I went along, I enjoyed it so much I kept going for years. I sought and found it's all true, this turned out to be the gateway to the most challenging but also rewarding period in my life.
As it says in the bible "taste and see that The Lord is good". I knocked and the door opened, I asked and got answers. I continue to taste The Lords goodness I read scripture with Living Faith a part of my balanced daily diet. Thank you all for your contributions, it is a good use of technology and a wonderful way to "chew" on scripture. Pat

I cannot say enough about Bible studies! While raising 3 children and teaching full time, I never had time for Bible studies! Now that I am retired, I am in my third study group and I am seeing connections between Old and New Testament, and God's Word and plans are making more sense! Going to Mass is not enough! Studying and discussing His Word is enlightening! I feel blessed!
