'Piercing Sorrow'

Our Lady of Sorrows

Standing by the cross of Jesus [was] his mother... When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother."

- John 19:25-27

When Joseph and Mary presented their newborn Jesus in the Temple, Simeon predicted that a sword would pierce Mary's heart (Luke 2:35). There could be no more agonizing piercing for Mary than to watch her son be crucified. As she stood below, silently pouring out her love to him, he looked down and saw her. In that wrenching moment, he entrusted her to John's care. In anguish she watched him die and be taken to the tomb. I love to imagine that, on Easter morning, perhaps Mary was the first person Jesus appeared to when he rose from the dead, holding with wordless tenderness the one who held him in her womb, transforming her piercing sorrow into joy.

Beloved Mary, help us feel your son's love with us in our sorrows.

- Patricia Livingston

As St. Paul explained to the Corinthian’s: "Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts." Mary our mother, please be with us as we make great efforts to achieve or obtain spiritual gifts.

The readings today helped me understand that we cannot be ALL the parts of the body. We are only one part - but very needed. Sometimes we can only share in the pain of someone by being there with them. We cannot change their circumstances, but we can accompany them. Because we cannot perhaps, change their death or suffering, we may tend to ignore them, or self isolate, or numb and distract ourselves somehow. Jesus gave us Mary and gave Mary us. We are responsible for each other that is we are response-able to each other! Praise be to God! Alleluia!

Patricia, thank you for your devotion.

“Standing by the cross of Jesus, stood the mournful mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last”.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with Thee.......

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us during our times of tribulation. Amen.

God Bless our living Faith Family and continued prayers for all.

I remember in 1964 attending the New York World's Fair and gazing upon the Pieta. I was only ten yet I remember being moved to tears at the thought of the Blessed Mother holding her son's crucified body. Even now I am moved to tears at the sorrow the Blessed Mother must have endured.

Yet as Patricia so beautifully wrote this morning in the reflection, "transforming her piercing sorrow into joy" brings such joy to my spirit as I reflect on our Blessed Mother seeing her son risen from the dead. What a joyous moment that must have been!

Compassionate Mother Mary, please continue to pull me closer to your son’s love and mercy for my life.

Mary, you began with a confident YES and then all the way to the cross you cared and carried heavy burdens to his cross.

Oh Holy Mother of Christ, please intercede for us with your son, today, tomorrow and until the end of our lives.

May we look towards your perfect example of true love and share that love with one another.

Today we remember your sorrows endured for all of us, so that we could one day be saved by your loving, merciful son Jesus Christ.

Thank you Mary for your love and commitment to all of us, who are not worthy, but now have a chance for eternal life.

Hail Mary full of grace be in our lives always.

Amen
