'Cross and Resurrection'

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

- John 3:16

God sent his son, Jesus, to be a model for us so that we could see how our human life was meant to be lived. His words and actions are guides for us. Our positive response to this is what it means to follow Jesus.

Jesus' death on the cross revealed the extent of his love for us and showed us that love sometimes has a very steep cost. His resurrection showed us that suffering and death are never the last words about our life. His resurrection showed us that we are destined to be transformed in ways we can scarcely imagine. That is really good news! Jesus accepted his cross out of love for us. And his acceptance of the cross led to his resurrection. As we accept whatever will be our cross, it will be the same for us!

Lord, give me the courage to follow in your footsteps and to believe in your promise of resurrected life.

- Fr. Kenneth E. Grabner, C.S.C.

Glorious Day by Casting Crown
https://youtu.be/VXp6xcY5IqU

"Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He's coming oh glorious day, oh glorious day"

As I read the readings today, I can totally relate to the Israelites in the desert in Numbers 21:4b-5a, "With their patience worn out by the journey, the people complained against God and Moses,"

When I am tired, I am cranky and I am mean and I find faults in others, especially a dirty bathroom and overflowing laundry :-(
* What do you do in the bathroom that would make it so dirty?
* Don't you flush the toilet? Why ring around the collar?
* It seems like you change your underwear every two hours?
:-( :-( :-(

Wow, in punishment God sent the serpents to bite many of the people and kill them :-( Isn't that a little overkill for just complaining? Will I get killed just for complaining? You see when I ask such question because I judge God by His actions and I judge myself by my intentions!

Here is what I learn in Psalm 78:34-35, "While He slew them
* they sought Him
* and inquired after God again,
* Remembering that God was their Rock and the Most High God, their Redeemer."

Here are the reasons behind the slewing in Psalm 78:36-37, "
* But they flattered Him with their mouths and lied to Him with their tongues,
* Though their hearts were not steadfast toward Him,
* nor were they faithful to His covenant."

God's character in Psalm 78:38, "But He,
* being merciful,
* forgave their sin and destroyed them not;
* Often He turned back His anger and let none of His wrath be roused."

Here is the whole story and not just simple doubting or complaining in Psalm 78:22-32, "For they did not believe in God, did not trust in His saving power. So He commanded the clouds above; and opened the doors of heaven. God rained manna upon them for food; grain from heaven He gave them. Man ate the bread of the angels; food He sent in abundance. He stirred up the east wind in the skies; by His might God brought on the south wind. He rained meat upon them like dust, winged fowl like the sands of the sea. They fell down in the midst of their camp, all round their dwellings. They ate and were well filled; He gave them what they had craved. But while they still wanted more, and the food was still in their mouths, God’s anger flared up against them, and He made a slaughter of their strongest, laying low the youth of Israel. In spite of all this they went on sinning, they did not believe in His wonders."

And still after all the Israelites have done, God still wanted them back, forgave and restored them as they repented!!!

Thank You, Lord Jesus! "Though You were in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, You emptied Yourself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, You humbled Yourself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted You and bestowed on You the Name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:6-11) I do not want to forget the works of the Lord Jesus! Amen!

Jesus thank you for coming and showing us the way. Thank you for all of your suffering for us so that we too may have eternal life.

I believe, Amen.
