'The Courage to Ask'

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

[Wisdom] has sent out her maidens; she calls
from the heights out over the city:
"Let whoever is simple turn in here;
To the one who lacks understanding, she says,
'Come, eat of my food...'"

- Proverbs 9:3-5

Several years ago, in working with a therapist, I offhandedly mentioned a choice my maternal grandmother had made decades before. The therapist stopped me and asked why she had done that. I didn't know, and what did it matter?

"You have to ask. It matters," she said. "You have to ask your mother." Which, I didn't want to do, but I did anyway. As it turned out, the answer to the mystery would provide clarity and wisdom in my own life and, later, even in that of my daughter.

There are many ways to seek wisdom. We listen, we seek, we observe, and sometimes, we have to find courage and just ask.

God of Wisdom, I set aside my fear and open myself to you because you are Truth.

Matthew 7:7-8, "“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

Does it mean God gives me everything I ask, seek and knock? He always answers our prayers and the choices are: Wait, Yes, and No! Don't mistaken His answer of 'NO' as not answering our prayers! 'NO' is an answer for our good!

Matthew 7:11, "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"

Is God my Father in heaven? Am I His child? This is a promise to His children only!

How do I ask, seek and knock?

1. Ask - with my mouth...belief from my heart in Jesus Name to glorify the Father!
* Romans 10:9, "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
* Luke 6:45c, "What you say flows from what is in your heart."
* John 14:13, " You can ask for anything in My Name (Jesus), and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.

2. Seek - with my eyes focus on Jesus
* Hebrews 12b-2a, "let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith."
* Psalm 119:15, "I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways."
* 2 Corinthians 4:18, "as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."

3. Knock - with my hands and ears diligently
* Revelation 3:20, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me."
* Galatians 6:9, "And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
* 2 Thessalonians 3:13, "As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good."

Glorify the LORD with me, let us together extol His Name (Jesus). I sought the LORD, and He answered me (sometimes with a 'no' for my good) and delivered me from all my fears. I taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Amen! (Psalm 34:4-5)

O My Amy!
This reading frightens me. I am 51 years old and for the last 3 years I have been tortured by a struggle. Should I ask my 75 year old mother? I wondered why my father hated me all my life. My best guess back then was because I was a female. So many other family members seemed to not like me....a child’s mind wondered why. My mom kept me from having relationships with others or at least ever being alone with them. And now, after the death of the man I knew as my father, and the death of all the senior relatives and friends who may have known a secret I am left to make the decision—should I ask a woman dealing with cancer and trust her to tell me the truth. It may marr the last so many days of our relationship but I am haunted by memories at least 3 times a week that bring the past up again. God help me to extract Your will for me from this reading. A brief prayer for guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Vicki, ask your mother. You might be surprised in that she may come to peace with sharing the information. God bless you and her.

Vicky, My heart goes out for you and my prayer goes up to God! There is one thing we ask God and His only answer is 'YES' with one condition:

James 1:5-6, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind."

You got this, Vicky! When you are with your mother, ask the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and promptings (God's timing that is) to ask your question in love with no accusation whatsoever!

Philippians 4:4-7, Vicky..."Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your (Vicky's) hearts and your (Vicky's) minds in Christ Jesus." Amen!

Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. Give us courage Lord. Prayers for the LF family.
