'Childlike Comparisons'

Sts. Pontian and Hippolytus

The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?"

- Matthew 18:1

Comparisons are quite odious and serve mainly to stimulate jealousy, self-aggrandizement or self-deprecation. Assessments continually loom around human minds: "Who has more money? Who's better looking? Whose children turned out the best? Who appears to be more spiritual?" The disciples fell into this same trap: "Who's the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven? Who will be first? Who will sit at your right hand?" Imagine how startled they must have been when Jesus called over a young child, pointing out that what counts is to have a trusting and loving relationship with God much like the young one at his side did.

Did this incident cure the disciples of their desire to compare? Most surely it gave them a lot to think about. Hopefully, it does the same for us too.

Thank you Sr. Joyce for your thought provoking devotion.

I too struggle with envy or comparisons especially when things don't go as I plan or prayed for.

But having "a trusting and loving relationship with God much like the young one at his side did" and by remembering that "It is the LORD who marches before you; He will be with you and will never fail you or forsake you. So do not fear or be dismayed" helps me to overcome my "envy".

I hope this helps our Living Faith Family cope with the envy in our lives. Prayers for all.

I hear You, Lord Jesus! Matthew 18:4-5, 14, "
* Whoever becomes HUMBLE like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And
* whoever RECEIVES one child such as this in My Name receives Me.
* it is NOT the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be LOST."

He calls me to be humble, to receive the children and to make sure they are not lost!

I desire to be childlike humble as in dependent (not independent). I desire to serve in the student ministries. I desire to bring back the lost. All in the Name of Jesus! You're the boss, Jesus!!! Do with me as You will :-) I am not going to move a step without You!

Twice You said, "be with you and will never fail you or forsake you!" (Deut 31:6b, 8b) And You said "do not fear or be dismayed!" (Deut 31:8c)

So it is with me that You will not fail me or forsake me, so I do not fear or be dismayed :-)

I worship You, Lord Jesus!

Envy runs wild in our society and is not a healthy situation for anyone.

If we continue to try to put him first in our lives the last thing I usually think of is who is greater.

Dive into his word today and continue to look around at ways we can be of help towards others.

Prayers for all members of our Living Faith Family. Please Jesus hear our cry and comfort us with your yoke.
