'Nurturing Community'

St. Jane Frances de Chantal

...if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it will move.

- Matthew 17:20

Given this reading, I'm inclined to be discouraged about my faith, seeing as it is clearly smaller than the very tiny mustard seed! So, after years of Mass, prayer, retreats and spiritual reading, should I throw up my hands and give up? Though I sometimes want to do this, I doubt it's the outcome Jesus sought.

Perhaps Jesus means that, however small our faith may be, it is powerful and worth nurturing. So that, when we have a proverbial mountain, or even a molehill, to move, our faith may be up to the task.

Nurturing and strengthening our faith takes all that I mentioned above, and more. It takes community. Much is gained by private prayer and reading, but without community, without bumping up against the reality of other people and their practice of faith, we can lose Jesus' trail in the labyrinth of our own minds and emotions. That's why participating in Mass as a community is essential.

Heavenly Father, Jesus make my faith stronger, greater, more powerful, supreme and as large as a mustard seed.

It reminds me of this recorded in three Gospels of Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27 and Like 18:27, "Jesus looked at them (disciples) and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Even though this is Jesus' answer to the disciples' question of "Who then can be saved?", I learn that ALL things are possible with God without exceptions.

Why then Jesus didn't heal everyone back in His days or these days? I have come across great faith-filled people and they ALL died and will die? He has healed and will heal them, not the way I envision it but the way God has planned long ago!

Why can I know or understand ALL His plan, His good and perfect plan?
* Deuteronomy 29:29, "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law."
* John 21:25, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."

So what is faith? What does it look like.....other than a mustard seed? And why faith?

* Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
* Hebrews 11:6, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

I love You, O LORD, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer, my God, my rock of refuge, my shield, my salvation, my stronghold, my all in all and my everything! Amen!

Amen. I especially feel that community at mass during the recitation of the Confiteor or when I look around and see parishioners moved by the sermon.

Amen! No matter how small, our faith is powerful and worth nurturing.
