'More Bearable Together'

St. Benedict

Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered...

- Psalm 105:5

My close friend is undergoing cancer treatment. I've been watching in awe as she endures surgery and prepares for radiation and chemotherapy, all while praying for me. I'm going through a difficult season too, but my emotional struggle pales when I imagine her physical pain and fear. I told her she should focus on herself, but she sent me to the Book of Job. When afflicted, Job cries out in agony to God. God says, in essence, what do you know about it, anyway?

I've read God's response as an unwelcome reminder of my smallness. But my friend said God's response comforts her. She sees the God of Job, who laid the foundations of the earth, who hemmed in the sea, and imagines herself as another one of God's wondrous deeds and yet more precious. Her pain and fear are made bearable when joined to mine, and we are both in the hands of a creator who is stronger and wiser.

This made me think of 2 phrases: "Misery loves company" & "There is strength in numbers." I think that when we have empathy, it draws us closer to each other. And where 2 or more are gathered, God is in their midst. But that phrase misery loves company really is a more of a negative statement. It implies just bringing someone else down with you so you aren't alone in your pain, your misery. Alcoholics do that. But to be involved with another person's suffering for the purpose of prayer is strength and it brings us closer to God...and that is how He turns the dark one's folly into our Fortune.

Peace,
~Lisa

Thank u Jessica for your reading. Your story is exactly what many of us are experiencing.
I just found out Dads prostrate cancer has probably returned and he has chosen to just stay the course for no treatment because he doesn’t want to go through the pain and suffering when they froze it 2 years ago. He’s probably going to pass soon cause he just lost his wife of 38 years to a heart attack and that seems how it goes.
He wants to visit but its best he stays there. Hes been grumpy, angry and thats understable for what hes going through.
Mourning a loved one is hard but with Gods help we will get through it.
Im so thankful he has a good friend whoses taken him under his wing and says hes like a father to him. Bless Don Rains and give him the strength to continue assisting my father because i am unable. My PTSD just wont handle it.

What did God accuse His people in the Hosea reading?
* Hosea 10:2a, "Their heart is false!"

What did God say they should do?
* Hosea 10:12b, "it is time to seek the LORD,"

What is God telling me today?

I will proclaim all Your wondrous deeds. Glory is Your Holy Name! I rejoice, my heart that seeks the LORD! The Kingdom of God is at hand: I repent and believe in the Gospel! I look to the LORD in Your strength; I seek to serve You constantly. I recall the wondrous deeds that You have done, Your miracles, and the judgments You have uttered. Amen! (Psalm 105:2b-3, Mark 1:15, Psalm 105:4-5)

Thank you for today's reflection and D. Brannan, we will pray for you as well.

Yes, I totally agree, why me feeling sorry for myself while I go through my struggles in life. This totally God's plan for each of our lives and he gives us strength in him to see it through to the end.

Many of God's people, followers have it far worst off than me.

May God continue to give me strength to endure and be even closer to his word.

Thank You.

Wow! Certainly does put my silly marital
separation in perspective. Though my husband left me and claims to have not loved me "for years and years," I know that my God DOES love me, and He won't ever stop. Praise God! Thanks be to God!

Your separation is not silly. I was once as wounded as you and the pain is very real. But "He has torn, that He may heal us; He has stricken and He will bind us up. Hosea 6:1. You are in my prayers today. God will comfort you and give you peace.

Praying for you, D. Brannan.......Don't lose heart! In the midst of your marital trouble, look for and praise Him for His glory which is unseen and eternal!!! The last time I had marital trouble, I started dating the one true God and developed a deep close personal relationship with Jesus! He has never left me ever since :-) or should I say I have not left Him ever since! He has alway been there waiting for me all along even before my troubles :-)

2 Corinthians 4:16-18, "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
