'Wounds and Understanding'

St. Thomas

Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side..."

- John 20:27

A long time ago, my oldest son stumbled in the kitchen. A knife in the cutlery rack of the open dishwasher door stabbed his leg and he had to get stitches. Now, 20 years later, you can still see the scar. I glance at my forearm and a darkened crescent shape reminds me of the time I burned myself with an iron.

Whether we are children or adults, we relish battle scars. We compare them, check to see if they are still visible. They are evidence of adventures, mistakes, and they are signs of surprising strength. We recognize ourselves, in part, through our scars.

Thomas was in Jesus' presence but held back, hesitant--until he touched the wound in Jesus' side. In and through Jesus' wounds, he remembered, he recognized, he understood.

Jesus, with Thomas, I contemplate your wounds and pray, "My Lord and my God!"

I'm sure every faithful Christian has a "doubting Thomas" moment. Lately I have made it a goal to ramp up my prayer life and to become more aware of Jesus' presence in my life. That's hard, and invites the spiritual warfare to ramp up as well. But Jesus forgave and blessed Thomas, and I have to remember he also blesses us when we have not seen but still believe. What a vast distance there is between doubting Jesus is with you when He is standing there in the flesh, and not recognizing that He is with you every single moment that you open yourself to His presence---or is there, really?

In the past, I have wondered why, “my Lord and my God!” Isn’t that redundant? Then I learned they have different meanings to me.......

* ‘my God’ for me is to acknowledge God is God (universal) Who created the universe and in charge of everything!
* ‘my Lord’ for me is to acknowledge God is Lord (personal) in charge of and over my life and everything!

I was one of those who acknowledged God as in ‘there is a god for those who need help,’ but I can do life on my own. You may call me an agnostic! Not until I come to know God and acknowledge He is the Lord of my life and every decision I make that I began a growing relationship with Jesus :-)

Lord Jesus, You are my Lord and my God!

Amen. Thank you Holy Father for this day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and Reconcilliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory. Amen
