'Becoming Known to Jesus'

St. Cyril of Alexandria

Lord, Lord... Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?

- Matthew 7:22

When a project intended for good--a weekly soup kitchen, a fund drive--fails, it's fairly easy to think that it "wasn't God's will" that it succeed. The saints often tell us, though, that failure is not a sign from God. They point to Jesus' ministry--a dismal failure by the reckoning of the times--that now does not look like a failure. So if failure is not a sign of God's will, is success? I think Jesus' words today tell us that it's not.

It is disconcerting to think that we could do great successful deeds, run successful programs and still have Jesus say, "I never knew you." It's fine to receive some praise and reward for our work, but if the praise and reward become the goal of our work, I think that's when we run the risk of becoming unknown to Jesus.

- Aileen O'Donoghue

The pratice of humble service is the way Jesus taught us, and to be honest it is taught in all major religions as the path to a Holy life.
Just my humbled opinion.
Peace be with you all!

Very wise devotional. Good advice to continually check our motivations.
