'Flowering Truthfulness'

St. Romuald

We are treated as deceivers and yet are truthful.

- 2 Corinthians 6:8

Paul's list of the hardships he endured, in service of the gospel, always daunts me. Would I stay firm in face of all that? Is Christ's love so deep in me that kindness and purity would outlast imprisonment, riots, beatings? I doubt it. I pray to grow in these virtues, knowing how tiny are their seedlings in me and how valuable they are. Prominent on Paul's list of virtues is truthfulness.

Truthfulness has a power and grace we recognize. I recall a meeting in which a vote was about to be taken. One person raised his hand and explained why he had to vote against, knowing that everybody else was in favor. In face of hostility, he named the uncomfortable truth we were prepared to deny. I don't remember who else was there, but I remember vividly his strong, clear voice.

May truthfulness grow strong in us and flower in our daily activities, giving witness to God in things small and great.

I'm so sorry about your wife's bone cancer, kjc :-( I pray for your wife, you and your four children! Our Father in heaven, Holy is Your Name! I pray with kjc for his wife's remission and healing of cancer with Your power and Your wisdom in treatment plans. I ask for Your peace and confidence to fill kjc and their children that Your plan for her is good and not to harm her but to grow them in the faith! In Jesus's powerful Name, at which every knee shall bow, I pray, Amen!

2 Corinthians 4:16-18, "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Amen, Mary!

What truth is Paul trying to tell us in today's passage?

2 Corinthians 6:1, "As your fellow workers, we appeal to you (us) not to receive the grace of God in vain."

I googled "vain and in vain." Here is what I find:
Definition: producing no result; without success or a result.
Synonyms: futile, useless, pointless, to no purpose, hopeless; unsuccessfully, without success, to no avail, to no purpose, fruitlessly.

Questions for me:
1. What have I done with God's grace?
2. Does God's grace produce any result in me?
3. Does God's grace result in any success in my life?
4. Is my life useful to God's grace?
5. Is my life purposeful to God's grace?
6. is my life hopeful to God's grace?
7. is my life fruitful to God's grace?

How do I go about 'not to receive the grace of God in vain'?

Here is what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 6:4-7, "
1. As ministers of God: through much......; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness,
2. In the Holy Spirit: in unfeigned love, in truthful speech,
3. In the power of God: with weapons of righteousness at the right and at the left;

I didn't know what 'unfeigned' mean. So I googled, "genuine; sincere"

Jesus made it (not to receive God's grace in vain) practical to me in today's gospel, Matthew 5:38-42!
* Offer no resistance to one who is evil.
* When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.
* If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.
* Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.
* Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.

There is no way I can do the above on my own!!! That's why Paul told me to do it in the Holy Spirit and in the power of God as a minister of God for what is impossible with man is possible with God (Luke 18:27)!

Lord, your Word is a lamp to my feet and light to my path! May Your Holy Spirit and Your power be with me as I learn and practice to be a minister of God in things small and big as I go about my daily to-do list, encounters with others and the youth ministries you have called me to! Amen!

1 John 4:12, "No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us."

Lord Jesus, like St. Paul, help me to faithful in the midst of hardships I encounter and unfortunately those I create for myself, as well.

Thank you Mary, for today's beautiful reflection.
