'Taking Direction'

St. Anthony of Padua

You will show me the path to life...

- Psalm 16:11

On a recent visit to a city in the U.K., my husband and I were bent over our phones trying to map a route to a popular spot. Within seconds, a man asked where we wanted to go and cheerfully gave us directions. A few blocks later, we pulled out our phone to make sure we were on the right path; once again, a stranger approached us and offered his help. Later in the day, it began to pour, and as we searched for a taxi, an elderly woman offered to walk us to the nearest taxi stand.

When we feel spiritually lost, disoriented and perhaps are even tempted to give up, it is easy to feel abandoned. That is when it is most important to recognize that help may come in forms and through people we least expect. Our challenge is to remain open to the surprising ways God enters our lives.

Keep me safe O Lord, you are my hope, was the response used in today's responsorial psalm, it comforted me, and your reflection is so true, and we sometimes cannot discern whether the offerings of help from complete strangers are genuine and safe to us, but those of us who believe and trust, have to do just that praying for courage, guidance and protection from God.

Last night, as we were trying to catch the London tube to my daughter 's place, 2 strangers carried our suitcases up 2 flights of stairs. Then they apologized that they had to catch the train that had already arrived and left our suitcases at the top of the stairs where we could see them. We thanked them a lot for their help as we plodded up the last flight of stairs. My daughter chided me that I didn't even remove my hand bag that was hanging on the handle of my carry on. I was so spent that I didn't think about it as the person could have walked off with my purse and passport. GOD WORKS IN WONDERFUL WAYS! I told her that I was confident that the young black man wouldn't do such a thing and GOD sent him to help me. He knew I was so exhausted. I asked her if I should have said no thank you because he was black. My daughter is also half-black. I said I just had to accept the man's help and trust GOD! GOD always sends his angels when we need them most.

That is why God's Word (GPS - God Positioning System) is so important for me daily, sometimes by the hour, by the minute and by the second!

I can't memorize all Scripture! But when something happens, the Word becomes a voice in my head and I would pray and go online to start searching Scripture with key words about my circumstance. There are many times, I would be watching a movie or a commercial and scream, "That's from the Bible!"

My prayers and my dialogs with God are centered in His Word. Sometimes, I remind Him what He said and I can hear and see Him smiling, "You did listen to Me, Salina!"

* 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
* Hebrews 4:12, "For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
* Matthew 24:35, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Words will never pass away."
* John 1:1, 14a, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...The Word (Jesus) became flesh and made His dwelling among us."
* Psalm 119:103-105, "How sweet are Your Words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from Your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
* Psalm 119:130, "The unfolding of Your Words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple."
* Isaiah 40:8, "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Word of our God endures forever."

I trust You, Lord, with all my heart! I lean not on my own understanding, in all my ways , I acknowledge You and You shall direct my paths (Proverbs 3:5-6 :-). Show me Your ways, Lord, teach me Your paths. Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long. Remember, Lord, Your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to Your love remember me, for You, Lord, are good (Psalm 25:4-7 :-)! Amen!

Yesterday and today, are a couple of the days when I feel spiritually lost and disoriented. Can't seem to find my footing. Came out of nowhere. I pray that I can see God everywhere and in everything today. Today is the day to re-energize.

You recognized the loss of your"usual self"...that in itself, is good. Now just keep your eyes and heart open, He is right in front of you.
And at the risk of sounding a tad flippant...don't forget to pray especially to St. Anthony today!
God Bless us and all who we love!

"Dear St. Anthony come around, something is lost and must be found!"
Thank you dear saint for always coming to our aid! As I grow older I find myself saying this prayer to him more and more! ;)

Amen, Jocelyn! God does indeed work through other people--more than once have I been wallowing in feelings of rejection and abandonment, and out of nowhere, it seems, an old friend makes contact, an unexpected show of support from others, the kindness of a stranger. I only hope I can be that light for someone else whenever there's a chance.
