'The Risk of Love'

They were all weeping loudly as they threw their arms around Paul and kissed him...

- Acts 20:37

St. Luke, in this passage, gives a moving account of the intimacy of farewell. Paul's fellow Christians are distressed as they escort him to his ship because he has just told them they will never see his face again. Even within the body of Christ, even when we hold each other in faith and love, partings are painful. The shadow of goodbye is the risk of love.

Now, in the unique time between Ascension and Pentecost, we experience this same tension of presence-in-absence. At the Ascension, Jesus' disciples watched him disappear yet again from their sight--not in blood and agony, as on Good Friday, but in an equally real way. Perhaps they felt the emptiness and loss we feel at times in our relationship with Christ. Did they know the empty space inside them would become, at Pentecost, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit? Can we allow ourselves to feel the longing for what God has not yet given?

I love the thought of that empty space inside us as the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit...I need to remember that.

Praying together is the most intimate act of any relationship from my experiences!!!

Here Paul prayed with the presbyters of the Church of Ephesus and they weeped loudly...
And John 17 is my most heart wrenching and touching chapter in the whole Bible for me as Jesus prayed for me so long ago before I was born...

John 17 is Jesus' direct prayer/dialog/address to His Father regarding Himself (17:1-5), His disciples (17:6-19) and us, the future believers (17:20-26)!

Here is what Jesus prayed for His disciples of His days in today's Gospel reading:
* I protected them
* I guarded them
* I speak this in the world
* so that they may share My joy completely
* I gave them Your Word
* I do not ask that You take them out of the world
* but that (I ask) You keep them from the Evil One
* Consecrate them in the Truth.
* Your Word is Truth
* I sent them into the world
* I consecrate Myself for them,
* so that they also may be consecrated in truth

Salina's lessons:
* Jesus didn't pray with them, He prayed for them as He addressed God the Father as the second person and the disciples as the third persons!
* Jesus reminded the Father what He has done for the disciples!
* Jesus gave credit to the Father as His Word is Truth!

So it is with my prayers for my children! "Father, I protected and guarded my children when they were young and I continue to do so in Spirit and in Truth as You protect and guard them now! I speak Truth to them so that they may share the joy You have given me! I gave them Your Word! I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the Evil One! Consecrate them in the Truth, and Your Word is Truth! As Jesus, Your Son, consecrated Himself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in Truth! In Jesus' Name I pray, Amen!"

Nicely crafted reflection Mary--"intimacy of farewell," "the shadow of goodbye is the risk of love," "tension of presence-in-absence," and "the empty space inside them would become...the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit." Love is a great risk for what we long for. Thank you for those words.

Amen. Thank you Holy Father for this day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and reconciliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. Amen
