'Watching Paint Dry'

St. Matthias

This I command you: love one another.

- John 15:17

I'm taking a stand in defense of paint. Specifically, paint drying. What is it we say when we want to express deadly dullness? "It's like watching paint dry."

Well, the other day, I watched some paint dry. It was actually not the most boring thing I've ever done. That second coat initially looked to be a completely different shade than the original, but as the minutes passed, the colors melded and the texture smoothed out. It was a slow and almost imperceptible process, but change did happen.

Jesus has commanded--yes, commanded--me to love. But does it matter? Does it really make a difference? Here, in daily life, the impact of obeying that commandment can be hard to discern.

But when I am patient and really look, I can, indeed, see change. Life becomes something different when forgiveness and mercy reign. Slow in coming, perhaps, but still very, very real.

Jesus, today I'll love, trusting that it will bear fruit.

- Amy Welborn

It is very refreshing to hear that someone takes time to observe even the most mundane process of watching paint dry. But I believe that we can learn so much from patient and slow change. I once watched a chameleon travel across my gate. These creatures are so slow and deliberate in their actions. But with this, I too, learned that with diligence and ambition even the slowest actions can take us places!

God's time is not our time.

What a picture you have painted, Amy! Thank you! No paint intended :-)

I relate it to painting my nails.......the second coat actually takes longer to dry.......I can't tell the difference from the look but my experience shows me! I can touch the first coat without messing up the surface when I wait for a short time, but the second coat.......that is a different story!

My experience tells me to paint my nails at night a couple of hours before I go to bed, so I let the polish dry and don't give it a chance to be messed up!

So it is with God...I need to nurture this relationship for my paint to dry and if I mess up...start again!

Studying Scripture is like painting nail polish on nails. I have to set aside time and let it dry before I can touch it. So it is the same way as I eat food to nourish my body. I have to get the healthy and fresh ingredients, cook the ingredients, put them on a plate, put them in my mouth, chew my food and wait for them to nourish my body! If I don't pick healthy and fresh ingredients, it will be useless to my body. If I don't put it on a plate, it can be messy. If I don't chew, I can choke!

The Scripture is always fresh and healthy. Hebrews 4:12, "For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

Praise You, Lord Jesus Christ! I love because You first loved me! You laid down Your life for me and call me Your friend! You chose me and appointed me to bear fruit that remains through Your Holy Spirit. Come with me, Lord, and we go out to do likewise in pouring out my life in the glory of the Father, Amen!

Praying and pleading for our needs of reconciliations in our LF families today! First and far most, our relationship with You, Lord, be reconciled as the price has been paid in full by Your sacrifice!!!

Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

My hope is in You, Lord! When I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel (having tunnel vision :-( Not others, not my difficulties, not my circumstances, not my feelings, not my will but Your will be done! Without hope, faith is unemployed and not applied!

Very striking metaphor--watching paint dry. So much of life is routine, not dramatic like when we walk into a newly painted room for our first novel reaction. All important chapters of our lives are filled with watching the paint dry--growing up, getting an education, pursuing one's work, living a single or married life, raising kids, growing old. There's a lot of paint to watch drying. Amy adds to that very long process that blessed combination of love, mercy, and forgiveness that bring the paint to its full richness--in time. To add another metaphor, in being loving, merciful, and forgiving, we need to learn the patience of the tortoise and subdue the impulse of the hare. May we all have a blessed day today acutely aware of what's going on when the paint is drying. Amen.

JA, thank you for these words. Your comments hit home for me and what I am unfortuntly experiencing these past few months. It is not where I want to be. I want to be loving, patient and more understanding.

Love in a marriage is a two way street but I need to love even when it is not returned.

I have faith that it will come back, I need to listen, not be angry, only love.

Love one another, Love one another.

Please Lord Jesus hear my prayers.

God Bless everyone.

Tim, It is wonderful to hear that you have faith. It is hard when love shifts to one side. But with prayer and our LF community, we can make change. I will ask God to help you and your wife!

Love……how powerful the act of it is in our human lives. The world is casual about every aspect of it, reducing it to a feeling. But if it is a commandment from our Lord then clearly it is a choice. If we obey, it alleviates a ton of human suffering for those who have been hurt and those who even mistakingly have done the hurting. The forgiveness and mercy extended through love, soothes the human soul and heals the person. As our marriages fades, my wife clings to her anger, bitterness and resentment nurturing it and remaining far from love's healing grace. please pray with me that for her sake, the Lord softens her heart and it be opened the the cure of love.
Peace

Amen. Thank you Holy Father for this day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and reconciliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. Amen
