'Listening and Hearing'

Fourth Sunday of Easter

But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

- John 10:2-3

In the heat of summer, we headed to a large swimming hole. One of the ways you could reach the water was by jumping off a steep, cliff like bank.

For a time, we watched as one young woman stood on the edge, contemplating a jump. Her friends floated in the water below, encouraging her to follow. She vacillated, moving to the edge, then backing away. Again and again, they called her name.

We had to leave, so we don't know if Chloe ever did jump. I wondered: did she lack courage, or was she heeding her better instincts? What a challenge it is at times to discern which voice to follow. Is it the voice of one that really doesn't care about us at all, or is what I'm hearing the voice of the Shepherd who will protect me, no matter how daunting the distance from here to there might seem?

Jesus, in the quiet, I listen for your loving voice.

Wow, Amy! After reading today's Scripture, the story of Chloe is.........challenging to me! My thought says, "Chloe, don't jump! You have seen too many of the you-tube videos that these young people jump off the cliff into the beautiful water holes! And you also see the statistics of the number of people who died doing it!"

As I re-read the story and realized Amy wrote, "One of the ways...." That becomes clear to me:

1. There is only ONE way through the sheepfold, the GATE!
John 10:2, "whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep."

2. "There are many good ways that lead to heaven" concept is for thieves and robbers!
John 10:1, "whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber."

3. Jesus is the ONLY GATE!
John 10:7, "So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep."

4. Do I understand it?
John 10:6, "Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees (the religious leaders) did not realize what He (Jesus) was trying to tell them."

5. Jesus is the Good Shepherd! Do I know Him?
John 10:11, 14, "I am (Jesus is) the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd sacrifices His life for the sheep......I am (Jesus is) the Good Shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know Me,"

6. All others are hired hands!
John 10:12-13, " hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep."

7. Jesus' promises!
John 10:9, 10b"I am (Jesus is) the gate. Whoever enters through Me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture......I came so that they (we) might have life and have it more abundantly."

My husband's favorite Psalm 23 and my prayer today, "
*The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want....
* In verdant pastures He gives me repose; beside restful waters He leads me; He refreshes my soul.
* He guides me in right paths for His name's sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for You are at my side. With Your rod and Your staff that give me courage.
* You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
* Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.
* The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want." Amen!

If our hearts are willing, we will hear his voice. Hearing his voice allows to follow his path, direction and teachings.

I hear his voice, usually everyday. I find his words usually the clearest in his words, (Scripture).

I am encourage by him to let others know how to hear his voice as well. My only wish is through my words and actions that other may slow down and be closer to hear his voice.

Lord Jesus, thank you for being my Shepard and leading me to and from the pastures of my life.

My I continue to hear your voice.

Sweet God blessed news Kay!
In 1999 I had a recurrence of my breast cancer - at Stage 4.
The exact same news as your dear friend - it had not spread anywhere else.
A true gift from God.
God Bless us all and all who we love!
Happy Sunday!

I have a bit of good news regarding my friend with lung cancer. A recent test has concluded that the cancer is only in the lung and hasn't spread anywhere else. Surgery will follow to remove the cancer in the near future. Thank you for your continued prayers. Thank you Lord for your continued healing! Amen.

Amen! One day I stopped at a local church with perpetual adoration to spend a few minutes. As I got up to leave I heard a clear male voice say sign up for adoration. I looked around and there was no one else except a woman in the back. I shrugged and thought not going to work as the only time I ever see open is 3 am. But something drew me to the sign up board on my way out. And there was a need for an adorer that worked perfectly for my schedule! I have now been an adorer for over 3 months every week for 1 hour. Feel blessed to have been asked! "Open my ears Lord, help me to hear your voice".
Prayers for the LF family today.

The Lord knows his sheep, all we really need to do is be open to listening to what the Lord is saying.
I'm very honest when I tell you that I actually feel the Lord talk to me. some might call it instinct
