'Saintly Attributes'

But Peter and the Apostles said in reply, "We must obey God rather than men. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree."

- Acts 5:29-30

I have hauled my children to art museums and historic churches since they were small. As a result, they have become adept at recognizing saints since, traditionally, saints are depicted with easily recognized symbols: their attributes.

It becomes a game of sorts, a game that they also enjoy turning around on me--not allowing me to see the title of a painting and then seeing if I can identify the saint; Catherine of Alexandria and her wheel, Jerome with his lion, Anthony and the Christ Child and, of course, Peter with his keys and the rooster nearby.

These attributes are the first layer of recognition. Much deeper are those Peter displays in this scene: courageous witness to Jesus in word and deed, attributes that at some point today, I just might be called on to live out myself in the hopes that in me, someone might see an attribute of Christ.

Thanks Amy! Your last line of your reflection really says it all...for us to model, to live out the attributes of Christ to others.

Indeed, Amy! We will be called not if but when to live out my life so others can see the attributes of Christ! That's why we are called Christians, little christ :-)

Here is what John said about Jesus' attributes and testimonies in today's Gospel of John 3:
* His testimony certifies that God is trustworthy
* speaks the Words of God
* does not ration His gift of the Spirit
(And as a result)
* whoever believes in the Son has eternal life
* whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

We as little christ ought to do the same: testify that God is trustworthy and speak the Words of God through the gift of the Holy Spirit so whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life! Amen!

Peter in the first reading agreed:
* We (you and I) must obey God rather than men.
* We (you and I) are witnesses of these things,
* as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those (you and I) who obey Him.

As I study John 20 at BSF this week, what Jesus said to Thomas in John 20:27b became endearing to me! When I first read it, I thought it was a rebuke to Thomas, "Don't be faithless any longer. Believe!"

But when I insert my name into it, it was so heart-warming and endearing, "Don't be faithless any longer, Salina! Believe!" I don't feel rebuke or disappointment in Jesus' statement, but a wink in His eyes :-) Can you see it?

Doubt is a good thing for God provides evidence for every step of belief :-) Have you seen the movie or read the book, "The Case for Christ"?

That is why God tells His people what is going to happen, then it happens according to His Word and He reminds us what He said has happened!

Yes, Jesus, You are my Lord and my God! You are close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit You save. Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all You deliver him. You hear the cry of the poor, especially the poor in spirit for their is the Kingdom of heaven! Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen!
