'A Saint Around the Corner'

Lenten Weekday

When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.

- Psalm 34:18

It seemed as if every time we passed the church around the corner from our small hotel, the door was locked. Finally, one afternoon, I noticed that the door was open. I peeked in: a stone church, worn wood pews, an elaborate old altar.

And near what had been the grill through which cloistered sisters had heard Mass in this former Carmelite convent chapel, stood a display: photographs of one Sister Veronica, a few pamphlets and a book in which to note prayers answered, perhaps because of the intercession of this nun, who died in 1964 and has now been declared a Servant of God.

All this time, I thought, a saint around the corner, hidden. I wondered how many others there are around other corners. I must always combat self-centeredness in my spiritual life and instead remember that God is at work in every life, behind every door in my neighborhood, hearing, rescuing, drawing near.

A very comforting devotion, Amy.

Lord, help me to always be looking around every corner for Your presence. Thank You for answering so many of my prayers. Amen.

I ponder on the question, "I wonder how many others (saints) there are around the corners?"

Paul said about saints in 1 Corinthians 1:2, "To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,"

Also in Ephesians 2:18-9, "For through Him (Jesus Christ) we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,"

Am I sanctified in Christ Jesus? Do I call upon my Lord Jesus Christ? Do I have access to the Holy Spirit?

Psalm 34:18, "When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress He rescues them."

I don't have to look around the corner, I have to clean the mirrors in my home and look.....there I am......locked away in a stone church until the door is opened! How many prayers God has answered me? How many intercessions He has responded?

Cleaning the mirrors reminds me of what I have to do:

Matthew 4:4b, "One does not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes forth from the mouth of God."

James 1:22-24, "But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like."

Lord Jesus, You are not some mystical figure! You are God, You are the Son of God Who came in obedience as one of us and dwelled among us until You were crucified, died and buried for all of our sins. You were raised from the dead on the third day and conquered death forever! You are the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through You. Now I know You, and so I know the Father also! (John 14:6) You taught me through Your Holy Spirit and Your Word! Don't let me walk away from the mirror forgetting I want to be more like You everyday, my Lord! Amen!

Salina Thanks for providing the following Scriptures:

Matthew 4:4b, "One does not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes forth from the mouth of God."

James 1:22-24, "But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like."

Let's hear this Wonderful Word and put it into action since it's truly the Bread of Life!

One of my favourite quotes is, "Ask, and it will be given you; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you." Matthew 7:7 So, I take the time to study, to search and to reflect even if its past my bed time, until I feel satisfied and have a prayerful oneness with the Lord. (I'm sure its no coincidence that "7" is the perfect number in the Jewish tradition.)
Matthew Kelly just gave a Lenten Reflection today on coaching, and how having a Spiritual Director is so important for your faith development. I don't have a Spiritual Director per se, but through reading the Bible, the writings of the saints, taking notes on homilies, going to a bible study group etc., I know God sends me "directors" in many forms.

Thank you for your reflection Amy. God bless the LF family.

Jn 7:25-30 "...his hour had not yet come. We can relate this verse to our prayers with God. We ask for things and it seems like forever sometimes, to get what we pray for. We are impatient. But God has a plan for us and we have to realize that our time 'has not yet come.'
