'An All too Human 'Rock''

The Chair of St. Peter

So I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church...

- Matthew 16:18

Some rock! This veteran fisherman lost faith and had to be rescued when Jesus invited him to walk on the water. He rebuked Christ and was himself rebuked more than once. At the Transfiguration, Peter was so overwhelmed that he wanted to build shelters for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. On the Mount of Olives, he fell asleep, then impulsively cut off the ear of the high priest's servant. And finally, in Christ's hour of greatest need, Peter denied him, not once, but three times.

As my wise friend likes to remind me, "God does not call the qualified--he qualifies the called." It was Peter, not the calmer, steadier apostles, whom Jesus chose to lead his Church. Maybe it was Peter's open heart and the genuine love he had for Jesus that outshone all his human failings.

Lord, help me to remember Peter's example when I think that I'm not qualified, that I'll fail or that my mistakes are too big. You judge me by a different standard, and you have your purpose for me.

What a consoling thought to know we are called, not because we are qualified but because we are LOVED.

Thanks for the beautiful insight into God's love for us!

Peter was able to grow spiritually through his failures simply because he had an open mind and heart, his falling and getting back on his feet symbolizes that he was willing to accept Gods love and forgiveness and then in turn forgive him self. Just my humbled opinion.
Peace be with you all!

"When the Pupil is ready, the Master shall appear". May The Lord qualify us through our loving acts to others. Peace Be With You!

Your reflection today gave me such joy in remembering how much we are loved. It caused me to immediately joyfully share it with others. God bless and thank you.
