'Joy, Pain, Acceptance'

St. Thomas Aquinas

Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.

- Psalm 98:4

My son had complained of aching knees for a while until finally he said he thought it merited a trip to the doctor. So X-rays were taken, the doctor twisted and turned my son's limbs and finally announced, "Hypermobility." His very flexible tissues, tendons and muscles ached from the strain of doing their job. There was no fix. He'd just have to live with it.

And I thought, how much of life is made of this--the reality of accepting limitations and pain? Some wounds and hurts can be healed, but some, indeed, we must endure. And what does acceptance mean for a person of faith? Perhaps not just to put up with it, but even in the midst of a life that's different than we'd hoped, to somehow dig deep and still rise in the morning, ready to give praise.

Lord, I praise you today in the midst of joy and pain.

- Amy Welborn

Listen to Paul’s experience of “Joy, Pain and Acceptance” in 2 Corinthians 12:5-10, “That experience is worth boasting about, but I’m not going to do it. I will boast only about my weaknesses. If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth. But I won’t do it, because I don’t want anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message, even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God.
* So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.
* Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away.
* Each time He said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
* So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses,
* so that the power of Christ can work through me.
* That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ.
* For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

So what is your thorn?

The acceptance of my thorn is based on God’s sovereignty, His love for me in sending His Son to die for me, and His plan for me from long ago to prosper me and not to harm me! Is it as easy to say as it is to feel it? NOT AT ALL!!!

These verses are very helpful in keeping me from focusing on my thorn, instead I throw myself at the mercy of my loving and powerful God in Lamentations 3:22-23, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Amen!!!

Amy, thank you for your devotion.

Jesus will appear a second time, to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. Believe in Jesus' saving love for us. Receive His forgiveness and salvation.

For some of us, our lives are not we had forseen or hoped it would be. Our lives have been turned upside down caused by an illnesses, a failed marriage, or whatever the cause might have been, but "we must continue to praise, love and trust in Jesus Christ our Lord". He Loved Us First. Amen.

I continue to pray for the Living Faith Family.

Oh Amy, I so needed to hear this right now. Thank you Lord for having it in print in the time that I need it. Living with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, having one son with the same, one son with autism and unable to get a job and a very disfunctional, abusive alcohol ridden family growing up I am suffering both the past and the future clashing together as adult children struggle and an aging parent demands care and assistance while wanting to maintain that disfunctional lifestyle. I needed to hear acceptance so that I stop trying to change and fix everything. I want to thank Living Faith for the charity of God’s help to me at no charge. I’m semi home bound and literally depend on this an one other meditation for my daily message from God. May God bless this publication and all those that contribute in any way.

Thank you, Amy, for sharing your experience and connecting it to the psalm. My bible study is reading the Book of Psalms now and I'm awed by how they put everything into perspective. I am reading a novel right now and one of the characters quotes a psalm: "How good to celebrate our God in song; how sweet to give fitting praise."

Heavenly Father, look down upon the family of my friend, Hank, today as they bury him. May they feel your presence and know that you will take care of him. Thank you for the opportunity for me to bring the Eucharist to Hank for the past two years, and for the friendship we developed. Amen.
