'Bringing Out the Good'

St. Hilary

O LORD, I am your servant.

- Psalm 116:16

On a recent trip, we faced a couple of near disasters. These situations weren't life-threatening by any means, but they were, shall we say, costly. And they were, I also admit, all my fault.

In the midst of one of these situations, of course I was moved to pray. First, for a resolution to the situation that involved no loss, either of material goods or my pride. "Please fix it," I asked God. "Thanks." But then a different prayer came to me, a simpler one: "Help me bring good out of this." Whatever that good might be: greater humility, closer attention to detail, my kids learning a lesson that might help them later--whatever. "Just open me," I ended up praying more than once, "to whatever good you can lead us to through this, Lord." And if I'm truly the Lord's servant, it strikes me that this is a prayer worth remembering and repeating--many, many times a day.

Lord, I open myself to serve you. Bring good out of whatever I do today--even my mistakes.

I really needed this today. I have been going through a very trying period in my 10 year marriage due to addiction and possible infidelity. Everything has been great until two months ago when the heavy drinking started. It has been difficult fighting to save this marriage when I'm the only one trying while my husband is hurting himself and all those around him. I really needed this prayer of "help me bring good out of this." I have to surrender this challenge in my life to God and ask for his blessing.

Thank you Amy for the reminder. I am sitting in Az. desert with many RVers and this morning was cold and dark but as I pulled open curtain the sun peeked over the mountain as if the eye of God was just opening to me to warm and bless my day. May we all be blessed this day and find good in our mistakes.

Nice Amy, as you can see from all the responses. We learn this young but it gets lost in the whirlwind of life. And that’s why we all are here, to lift each other up in the areas of life that we sag. My current situation in life is very low and this was a shout out to me. For the first time in life i have experience my faith to waver. It is only the belief that God has some good to be gained through the deep darkness of my life that makes things worth it. Thank you for the raw truth in your meditation and thank all you disciples here at LF for your inspiration each day!

Amen! Thank you Holy Father for this beautiful day and for today's Gospel. Thank you Lord for my faith, my life and for my family. Thank you Holy Father most of all for your great sacrifice and for the opportunity of forgiveness and reconciliation. Please Lord have mercy. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory. Amen

Indeed, Amy!

That brings me to this in today's reading Psalms 116:17, "I will offer a sacrifice of praise
and call on the Name of the LORD."

Why would I call praise a sacrifice? This praise is a sacrifice because this is how the Psalmist started out his prayer in Psalms 116:3-4, "
* I was caught by the cords of death; the snares of Sheol had seized me;
* I felt agony and dread.
* Then I called on the Name of the LORD, “O LORD, save my life!”

This praise is not an answer to a prayer, but a praise
* that God hasn't answered my prayer yet, He is still God!
* that He has done it before and my faith says He will do it again!
* that even in the death of His beloved not answering my prayer, I will still praise Him!

This reminds me of the prayer/declaration from Daniel's friends before the fire inferno in Daniel 3:16-18, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar,
* we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.
* If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and He will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand.
* But even if He does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

Now, that's a prayer with a praise of sacrifice!!! It isn't easy to pray a prayer that says, "Whatever it takes, Lord!" Because it WILL take the bottom pit to look up :-) Just as Jesus was to die on the cross to save us!!! We would not have prayed, "Lord, whatever it takes, even if it takes the life of Your beloved Son to save us!"

But that is exactly what happened! And that was Their plan from the beginning, mind you!
* Genesis 3:15, "And I will put enmity between you (the serpent) and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel."
* John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His One and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
* Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

First, I would like to thank you all for the prayers for my son and my NEW Daughter in law, the wedding went great. Weather was bad, but not as bad as expected. Everyone had a great time and everyone got home safe, which is the most important part.

Amy, thank you for today’s message. I too want to learn from all of my experience, good or bad.

I am a sinner and need to continue to do much better in my life and re-birth. Do not go back to our past sinful ways re-birth to new habits that follow the teachings of Christ.

Amen.

The only reason that we can experience full goodness is to see the bad. A lot of good will result out of a bad situation. And the best part of the whole experience is that God is with us every step of the way!!!

In the early 90's driving to work one morning I was overwhelmed with sadness for the state of my marriage and the increasing risk to my daughters. Big car, big job, big house but utter desolation. From my brokenness I cried out to God, I asked for help for my marriage and asked that my daughters would grow into mature loving adulthood. Taking their place and contributing positively to society. I immediately made a covenant and offered my life to be used in any way he saw fit. The answer was instant I knew I was on a journey, it's a process that continues. Enough to say God kept his side of the deal, and I hope to live long enough to fulfil my covenant promise in thanks for all the Godincidences (miracles). Alleluia Thanks Amy and all LF contributors
