DAILY DEVOTIONS:

'Miracles of Forgiveness'

Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them.

- Mark 2:2

After Jesus preached, the crowd witnessed his curing of the paralytic man. The crowd was large. The man had to be lowered through a hole in the roof, made by four men who then settled him before Jesus. To this day, crowds gather in many parishes. And in their midsts are surely those who harbor hopes for the miraculous. In this gospel, we also hear that Jesus forgave the sins of the paralytic, a man who would not have been there save for the generous labors of four men. Very few people experience the miraculous healing of illnesses. There are far more who know the miracles of the forgiveness of sin and the kind generosity of friends and strangers.

We may yet look for the extraordinary in life. But it is God who gathers a crowd and works miracles through them. We call it the Church.

- Fr. James Stephen Behrens, O.C.S.O.

Have you ever wonder what did Jesus preach from? Here in Mark 2:2b, "He preached the Word to them."

The Word......He preached from the Scriptures! Searching on Google, I found 45 times Jesus quoted from the OT! Matthew 5:17, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."

Bob M is right that Jesus' first order of business is 'forgiveness of sins!'

So it was with John the Baptist or any prophets or disciples......
* Matthew 3:1-2, "In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
* Acts 2:38, "And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

To me the Gospel, Good News, is the forgiveness of my sins made available through the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name! I Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, Who forgives all my iniquity, Who heals all my diseases, Who redeems my life from the pit, Who crowns me with steadfast love and mercy, Who satisfies me with good so that my youth is renewed like the eagle's. Amen! (Psalm 103:1-5)

He taught like "someone with Authority!"...why we should be more familiar with His Holy Word...all of it!

Btw, in "Catechism in a Year", today's entry is:

18. Why does Sacred Scripture teach the truth?

Because God himself is the author of Sacred Scripture. For this reason it is said to be inspired and to teach without error those truths which are necessary for our salvation. The Holy Spirit inspired the human authors who wrote what he wanted to teach us. The Christian faith, however, is not a “religion of the Book”, but of the Word of God – “not a written and mute word, but incarnate and living” (Saint Bernard of Clairvaux).

19. How is Sacred Scripture to be read?

Sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted with the help of the Holy Spirit and under the guidance of the Magisterium of the Church according to three criteria: 1) it must be read with attention to the content and unity of the whole of Scripture; 2) it must be read within the living Tradition of the Church; 3) it must be read with attention to the analogy of faith, that is, the inner harmony which exists among the truths of the faith themselves.

Today was the first time that I recognized that in this story, Jesus' first order of business was to let the paralytic know that his sins were forgiven, THAT is what was important. It was only after Jesus read the thoughts of those around him that he chose to heal the man, as a sign to those present. Why, oh why Lord, do we need not recognize that your forgiving of our sins is the most precious "healing" that we will ever be given?

Bob What you wrote is completely true. I would like to make a correction. The first order of Jesus' MINISTRY is FORGIVENESS. It is not a BUSINESS WHERE YOU BUY OR SELL. It is a FREE GIFT both from God and Ourselves
